Members of West Hill Women’s Group were entertained when Honiton auctioneer, Duncan Chilcott gave a talk on discovering antiques.

The thirty-strong group had been invited to bring along items that they were curious about for Duncan to discuss.

Amongst the items of interest was a handwritten journal from WW1 that had been passed down through the generations. The journal originally belonged to a soldier serving in South Africa, who decided to write it after he caught malaria and was hospitalised.

Another treasure was a Victorian or Edwardian bumblebee brooch encrusted with diamonds and rubies, which was pronounced a very pretty item. This was not an item by item valuation day, but more of a relaxed group learning session.

The group enjoyed Duncan’s talk, and presented him, and Elizabeth Chilcott with chocolates and wine by way of a thank you.

The West Hill Women’s Group meets on the first Thursday of each month in the West Hill Village Hall from 7.30-9.30pm.
