Barratt Homes apprentice Joe Harris (19) is celebrating this week, after picking up a coveted carpentry accolade from Exeter College.

The award-winner, now in his second year, is learning his trade at the housebuilder’s Saxon Fields development in Cullompton and has been named Site Carpentry Level 2 Apprentice of the Year 2016-17.

“Big congratulations to Joe - this is fantastic news,” said Barratt Homes managing director Paul Moran. “We are all very proud of him because he has worked incredibly hard for this award. And to add to his success, he has completed his level two diploma with a distinction.

”I have no doubt there are more awards to come for Joe - and I look forward to watching his career progress over the coming years.”

Joe joined Barratt two years ago as an apprentice carpenter, initially working at the house builder’s Rydon Lawns development in Exeter, whilst studying at Exeter College, before moving to his most recent placement last May.

“This has been a wonderful experience for me, and I’d like to thank all those at Barratt who have helped me so far in my career,” said Joe. “I have learned a tremendous amount during my time at these two developments. The high quality of work expected of me, and the training I’ve been lucky enough to receive, has definitely contributed to my winning this award.

“I am looking forward to continuing the learning process in my apprenticeship, and I know I’m in the very best hands with Barratt and Exeter College.”

Before joining Barratt, Joe studied level 1 diploma in site carpentry, alongside the rugby academy at Exeter College. He also completed work at Barratt’s Hillside Gardens and Pinbrook Park developments in Exeter - making planters and adding finishing touches to new homes.

During his time in Cullompton, Joe has been involved in a school project - installing fence posts and handrails. The keen Exmouth Rugby Club player also recently received Barratt Exeter’s Apprentice of the Year Award.
