Junction improvements in Exeter near completion
Improvement work at the junctions of Heavitree Road, Denmark Road and Russell Street in Exeter are on schedule and nearing completion.
As part of Devon County Council’s scheme to improve the pedestrian crossings at the junction, both Denmark Road (between Athelstan Road and Heavitree Road) and Russell Street (between The Triangle Car Park and Heavitree Road) are closed. They will remain closed until the completion of the work, which is expected on Friday 22 March.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “It’s encouraging to see that work is progressing well and nearing completion. Once this scheme is in place safety will be much improved for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly for children and parents at Newtown Primary School and people with mobility problems. Hopefully this will help more people to walk and cycle around this part of the city. Of course as the work continues, every effort is being made to minimise disruption and maintain access to properties.”
Councillor Richard Westlake, Devon County Councillor for Newtown and Polsloe, said: “I’m pleased that this scheme is taking shape and hopefully it will resolve most of the problems we’ve had at the junction, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. I would hope that we can then deal with the parking problems within the Denmark Road area, which the Highways Committee agreed would proceed once this scheme has finished.”
The final phase of the scheme involves the resurfacing of Heavitree Road and for safety reasons traffic will have to be restricted to a single lane all day on Sunday (17 March) and overnight from 7pm until 7am from Monday 18 March to Friday 22 March.
Heavitree Road traffic will run inbound only and outbound traffic will be diverted via Magdalen Road. Magdalen Road inbound traffic will be diverted via College Road and Heavitree Road.
Temporary one-way restrictions will be in place on Heavitree Road (between Paris Street roundabout and Clifton Road) and Magdalen Road (between Western Way and College Road / St Leonard's Road junction) to help traffic flow.
