ExIST explores the impact of living with plastics

This month, Exeter Chamber subgroup, Exeter Initiative for Science and Technology (ExIST) held its latest event which focused on the extremely relevant topic of plastics and what impact plastic is having on the planet combined with the science, research and development of alternative materials and technology.

Speakers for the event included Dr Mark Hennen of ARGANS Ltd who are using novel techniques to establish the feasibility of observing floating plastic litter from orbit. The results of their research in this area will aid in the locating and tracking of marine plastics.
Also speaking at this month’s event was Jessica Hickie from the Environment Agency who was appointed as Programme Manager for the Environment Agency’s Plastics and Sustainability Team in 2018. The team runs programmes with communities, businesses, government and schools with the vision to make plastic pollution a thing of the past.

Dr Don Wellings, of SpheriTech was also among the speakers. SpheriTech is an independent research, development, and manufacturing company focused on developing novel and innovative polymeric materials which offer wide-ranging application solutions to clients within the life science research, biotechnology, and healthcare industries.

Attendees also heard from Row for the Ocean. One of the four founders, Kate Salmon updated delegates on the team’s 3,000 mile row across the Atlantic which hopes to raise awareness of ocean plastics. The team are also working with charity, Surfers against Sewage in the hope of creating a Plastic Free Exeter by the year 2020.

I hope that this topic stays in the thoughts of all in attendance, especially the fact outlined by Jessica Hickie that all plastic that was ever made still exists.  I am truly appreciative of all who have contributed towards the excellence of the event which was much enjoyed and valued by all who attended.”
