Trek and Volunteer in the Himalayas with Hospiscare in 2020
Keen trekkers and those seeking an exciting challenge will want to put 7 - 18 November 2020 in their diaries and sign up to trek in the Himalayas with Hospiscare. Hospiscare will be holding a presentation evening on 30 July open to all to find out details at Searle House in Exeter at 6pm.
The 5-day trek will take place among majestic landscapes within sight of the snow-clad peaks of the Annapurna mountain range, where the views are truly awe-inspiring, and sunrise at Poon Hill, the highest point of the trek, is an unforgettable experience. Staying overnight in quaint, locally owned teahouses will offer matchless opportunities to experience the culture and traditions of the local people.
The undulating route of the trek is likely to include stony trails, muddy forests, rocky steps and scree slopes as well as gorges, which will be crossed on rope suspension bridges. Uphill stretches will be gruelling while downhill ones will be equally arduous. Each day’s trek will take between five and eight hours. For all these reasons the trek is graded as ‘challenging’ so this is not an event for the unfit or the unwary: training and preparation will be required.
The trip begins with a four-night stay in Kathmandu, where two days will be spent in helping the hospice there with a range of practical tasks, before setting off on the scenic drive to the lakeside town of Pokhara and then onwards to the start of the trek at Nayapul.
Organiser Rebecca Botfield said: “The Himalayan Trek promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s generating a lot of excitement and people have already signed up. We’ve announced it in good time to allow plenty of training and to fundraise the target.
“Among the many highlights of the trip will be a visit to the Kathmandu Hospice where we’ll offer a helping hand. It’s going to be a fantastic trip, but this will make it even more worthwhile,” she added.
Hospiscare’s last overseas trek saw a team of 18 trek over three volcanoes in Iceland. Tanya Rodgers was one of those trekkers and said, “I think the whole experience, the fundraising and training and doing the trek has been a very humbling, inspiring and profound experience. Hospiscare were with us at every step and added to the overall experience - I would certainly do another Hospiscare overseas trek.” Together the group raised an amazing £66,411.61. The total was announced to the group at a thank you evening donated by On The Waterfront.
