EGGHEADS from Devon can test their general knowledge and help raise money for a good cause during a quiz night being held at an award-winning pub in the county this month (December 2019).

The charity quiz takes place at The Swan in Bampton on December 22 in aid of CHAT (Churches Housing Action Team), which provides help to the homeless or those at risk of losing their home.

Chef-patron Paul Berry, who co-owns The Swan with his wife and fellow award-winning chef Donna, said: “We host regular monthly quizzes but our Christmas one is always a bit special and we want to invite people along to test their general knowledge!

“This year we’ll be raising funds for CHAT. The evening starts at 8.15pm, after the carol concert in St Michael’s church, which is just behind the pub, on Sunday, December 22. On the night we’ll also be collecting items for CHAT. Items that have been requested include shampoo, shower gel, washing-up liquid, toilet rolls, tins of cold meat, tinned mince and tins of stew. Smaller sizes of shampoo, shower gel and washing-up liquid are most useful.

“We have a maximum of six people per team and entry costs £2 per person. It’s a fun evening out with friends or family members over a pint with a dash of healthy competition on the side! We hope lots of regulars and new faces join us for the event to raise lots of money for our two worthy causes, but we do recommend that anyone wishing to take part gets here early.”

There will also be free chips and mince pies for quizzers.

CHAT has been working since 1995 to tackle homelessness, avoid evictions and to bring hope to the communities of mid-Devon. All its services are provided free of charge by a dedicated team of trained staff, supported by knowledgeable volunteers.

It believes everyone is entitled to decent, secure and affordable housing.

The Swan, which is an AA Four Star Gold Inn and is the oldest pub in Bampton, was named as one of the top 50 gastropubs in the country for the third year running this year. It is also in the ‘Estrella Damm’ Top 50 for 2020 and will find out where it has been placed in January.

It was also named Gold Tourism Pub of the Year 2018 at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards and was voted Best Dining Pub for 2018 in the Trencherman Awards.

Donna was also one of three finalists in the Devon Life and Trencherman Awards in 2018.

The Swan’s annual charity Christmas Quiz takes place on Sunday, December 22 from 8.15pm. To find out more, please call 01398 332248 or visit www.theswan.co.
