If you’re saving more money during this crisis by not going to the pub every night or by not spending your weekends going out for food, then you may be thinking about your next big purchase, a car.

However, before jumping into any major decisions, there are a few things to consider that’ll help you make the right choice in purchasing the car that’s best suited to your needs and style. Here are five major things to think about before taking the leap:

  1. Your Budget

The budget of the car itself is of course important, whether you’re paying for a car outright or whether you’re paying for it on finance. However, there are other costs that contribute towards a car such as insurance, tax, MOT, repairs and whether the car uses petrol or diesel, so these are things to think about before buying.

If you’re really keen on getting a car that you don’t think you’re able to afford, then it’s worth looking at used cars. Once a car leaves the show room, a fraction of the price is instantly shaved off, so these are a lot cheaper than buying a brand-new car.

  1. The Number of Passengers

One thing to consider when purchasing a car is how many people you are going to be driving around. There wouldn’t be much point in getting a four-seater car if you have a partner and three kids as it would always mean someone would have to stay home.

Also consider the number of doors. If you have a baby, then it’s a struggle getting them in and out of the back seat when you only have a three-door car.

  1. Your Must Have Features

Before you start looking at your perfect cars, focus on things that you really want your car to have. Some things include:

  • Heated steering wheel
  • Push button start
  • Cruise control
  • Camera-assisted parking

There isn’t any point in paying extra for features that you’re not necessarily going to use, but obviously if you want something, its worth paying a little extra for it.

  1. The Type of Driving You’ll Be Doing

You need to consider what sort of driving you’ll be doing. Is the driving that you do primarily on the motorway or are you more of a residential street driver? Different cars are made for different types of driving.

If you’re primarily driving on a motorway, then cars that are made for this usually are designed to make longer journeys stress-free and safer, and include features such as cruise control.

  1. Test Drive – Does it Feel Good?

While all the features above are important, there isn’t anything more important than feeling comfortable and happy with the car that you’re purchasing. Take the car that you think you’re happy with on a spin and play around with all of the features that it offers. If the car doesn’t feel right, or you’re not completely comfortable with the car then maybe you should consider something else.

Don’t leave the garage with the idea that you’ll get used to it. You want to leave 100% knowing that you’ve made the right choice as a car purchase is a big commitment.
