Vulnerable young people helped by music thanks to Action Fund Grant

A social enterprise that supports vulnerable young people through music technology and music production sessions has been able to continue online during the Coronavirus outbreak thanks to a grant from the Exeter Covid-19 Community Action Fund.

Sound Gallery CIC have been awarded £1,000 from the Action Fund. The sessions, which would normally have been provided face-to-face from the Sound Gallery Studios at Exeter Phoenix, will now be delivered remotely via Skype or Facetime.

Maria Peters, of Sound Gallery CIC, said the grant was great news for organisation and some of the people it served.

“The money will enable us to continue with our support for vulnerable young people, especially those who have severe anxiety, depression and other mental health issues,” she said.

“We are also continuing to try and raise funds for our organisation as we are currently not eligible for any other government grants or support,” she added.

So far more than £57,000 has been distributed to groups and charities by the £1 million Exeter Covid-19 Action Fund, which is being supported by the Exeter Chiefs Foundation.

The Action Fund was launched at the end of last month in tandem with support service Exeter Community Wellbeing. It enables organisations to get rapid access to small grants to allow them to work on local projects to support those people and communities most affected by the pandemic.

Also receiving grants were the following groups:

  • Living Options Devon - £3,000 towards covering loss of income due to the cancellation of room bookings and public donations. The charity is still delivering essential services.
  • YMCA Exeter Community Projects - £977.50 towards a project aimed at reducing loneliness through digital communication and providing relief from food poverty
  • The Salvation Army - £3,000 – towards covering the loss of income due to the cancellation of room bookings and weekly collections. The charitable organisation is still delivering essential services.
