Keeping score in axe throwing is relatively simple and goes by rounds. Here is a complete, short guide to axe throwing scoring.

If you're looking for a fun night out with your buddies, you should consider axe throwing. Similar to darts, it's easy to learn, fun, and it is a great time.

Axe throwing has become an increasingly popular bar game with urban axe throwing bars popping up everywhere. Not only that but also, the International Axe Throwing Federation has created a sport out of the event played in leagues. To date over 51 million axes have been thrown in competitions around the world.

If you're looking to join a league, or just learn how to play you'll want to learn the official axe throwing scoring and rules to understand how it works.

Axe Throwing Rules

Each game consists of three matches. In each match, the opponents will get five throws. In other words, for a whole game, each opponent will get 15 throws. Whoever wins two out of the three matches is the winner of the game.

If you are playing and you or your opponent should lose the first two matches, don't worry, you will still finish your third match because throwing axes are fun!

Axe Throwing Scoring

Now that we understand how games are played, let's talk about how you actually win a game. All games are won by accruing points or scoring more than your opponent.

Target Points

Similar to darts, you score points by throwing your axe at a target. The target consists of three circles: an outer circle, a middle circle, and a bullseye circle. Above the target are two green circles that are also called redemption circles.

Scoring in axe throwing is calculated by throwing at a target:

  • Green Circle/Redemption Circle = 7 points
  • Bullseye = 5 points
  • Black Middle Circle = 3 points
  • Outer Blue Circle = 1 point

Technicalities

If your axe sticks in the target between two circles, the points are awarded for the circle where the greater half of the axe is.

For instance, if it lands between the bullseye and the middle circle area, but the axe is more towards the middle circle, the throw would be awarded 3 points. Get it?

Also, if you throw the axe and it does not stick, the axe gets a score of 0 points.

Redemption Shot

In a tournament match, if the game is out of reach, the opponent can call out "redemption"! If that player throws their axe in the green redemption circle, then there is a one-throw sudden deathmatch.
