New city homelessness service opens its doors in Exeter

A newly refurbished homelessness service in Exeter is set to provide much-needed short-term accommodation for the city’s homeless.

Having opened in Howell Road this week, it will offer 11 bedrooms and communal facilities for homeless adults and those at risk of being made homeless.

Run by Sanctuary Supported Living, the building has been fully refurbished with a new kitchen, bathrooms and security system. Working on referrals from the Rough Sleepers team and Exeter City Council, the service will provide first stage accommodation for those in crisis and requiring immediate support.

Adults referred to the service will receive short-term personalised support from Sanctuary’s on-site staff helping to provide access to move-on accommodation, seeking employment and other community support services. The ultimate aim is to help residents develop the confidence and skills they need to live fulfilled, independent lives.

Local Service Manager, Sarah Phillips, said: “I am delighted to see Howell Road up and running and ready to support the city’s homeless. It has been a super undertaking to mobilise a brand-new service and completely re-fit a building and – at a hugely important time of year as well.

“Our team is committed to making a difference to the city’s rough sleepers. Our intensive, short-term personalised support is designed to help stop the negative cycle of homelessness and ensure that our clients can access all the help and advice they need to move on with their lives.”
