Killerton National Trust estate near Exeter has been declared ‘the perfect place for Nordic walking’ by Nordic Walking Devon.

Nordic walking is a full body exercise with specially designed poles that propel you forward as you walk. It’s a form of outdoor fitness that is easy on the joints because the poles take the weight off the knees and lower body joints which make you feel lighter on your feet. You work the entire major muscles in the body burning 20% - 40% more calories, yet strangely it feels easier than ordinary walking.

Qualified UK instructor, Fiona Swan said: "When I started my business two years ago, I searched the county for walking routes that were off the beaten track and discovered the parkland at Killerton is perfect for this form of fitness. Killerton’s trails are not over surfaced, so walkers can get a good ‘plant’ with Nordic poles and the varied paths, wide open spaces and woodland make it a very magical place to explore."

Fiona has been leading Nordic Walking fitness classes at Killerton for the past 18 months and her sessions are frequently fully booked.

Helen Trebble, Killerton’s Community Access Officer added: "Beyond Killerton’s house and garden, our 10 square mile estate offers some of the southwest’s most beautiful places to take a walk.

"Nordic walking is a fun form of exercise suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness so it’s an activity virtually all of our visitors can take part in.

"Judging from our fully-booked classes it’s proving to be very popular. It’s also a very sociable pastime, I recommend to anyone to give it a go."

Free 45 minute taster sessions take place at Killerton on the following dates:

Thursday 11 April - 12pm
Monday 6 May - 6.30pm
Saturday 18 May - 10am
Thursday 6 June – 6pm

Poles are provided and advance booking is essential.
