Moving houses can be one of the most stressful life experiences, with almost 1-in-2 admitting they’ve felt increased stress when packing up to move according to a recent study5, and choosing the area you want to move to can be even trickier. For those looking to start their search for a new home, the cities that landed in the top five are as follows:

York: Claiming the top spot, York received a total score of 5.1, and is home to beautiful buildings such as York Minster and picturesque cobbled streets you can wander all day. This medieval city has a higher average housing price (£286,987), but has a low crime rate, and was even named the third safest city in the UK in 20223.

Newcastle: Following closely in York’s heels is Newcastle, scoring an overall rating of 4.8. Newcastle actually has the largest amount of green space out of the cities Reassured researched (59.1%). Newcastle is also a thriving student hub and came fifth with the number of young people (17.45%).

Oxford: Home to the oldest university in Britain and picturesque streets, Oxford takes third place, with an average salary of £35,742 per annum. Located in Oxfordshire, you can access large amounts of green space, and the city has an abundance of quaint and quirky shops and museums you can visit.

Norwich: Coming fourth in the up-and-coming areas of the UK for 2023 is Norwich. With its beautiful cathedral and surrounding green space, this is a great southern city to move to, whether you move on your own, or with family. Scoring 4.7, it follows on Oxford’s heels and is a great place to settle down.

Exeter: A cathedral city, Exeter is home to beautiful scenery and old castles. Located in Devon, this is a safe bet for anyone wanting to be close to the sea, wildlife and green space. Only a few decimal points behind Norwich, Exeter scores 4.7 on the list and lands itself among the top five places to relocate to in 2023.

A spokesperson from Reassured comments on the research: “Whether you’re looking for a greener area to move to, or one which has low crime rates and higher average salary, moving homes can be daunting. It can be helpful to look at areas and base your decision on key factors like the ones we have used in our study. That way, you can decide which feels right for you.”
