Lucian Willow lost his memory in Berlin in 1945. Lord Brook is looking after him on his country estate. And there’s something Lord Brook doesn’t want him to remember. But when a circus comes – all hell is let loose.

Lucifer Saved is a verse play by Peter Oswald, former Writer-in-Residence at Shakespeare’s Globe, and dubbed ‘Our most surprising and inventive playwright,’ by Theatre Record.

Combining extremes of comedy and tragedy, the play attempts to show what happens when guilt is transferred to the innocent; reaching right back through theatrical traditions to the medieval mystery plays, when demons walked the stage.

How can we store our collective memory of all the horrors of the twentieth century? What can we do with all the slaughter and madness? Can we rationalise it? Can we forget it?

Lucian Willow is forced to carry it all, and is pushed beyond the limits of endurance to the point where humans and the supernatural meet.

The Abyss has, since 2002, performed the works of Peter Oswald at home and abroad. We have assembled our best company yet, for our greatest challenge so far – Lucifer Saved.
