The Dixie Ticklers
The Dixie Ticklers Standing Pat Tour, Spring 2013
This tour/gig is supported by Jazz Services as part of their National Touring Support Scheme
Standing Pat, the debut album from The Dixie Ticklers is an in depth study of New Orleans jazz. The band has put today's date on early jazz, placing it alongside groove-based shuffles and fresh modern treatments whilst constantly staying true to the polyphonic approach that shaped the music of the initial pioneers such as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton. Look out for them this spring as they tour the UK in support of the new album.
Led by clarinettist and composer Dom James, the six piece ensemble combine their deep love and understanding of the feel templates and language of early styles whilst each expressing their own musical voice. In recent years they have toured much of Europe and further afield including a fifteen-date tour of Australia in 2012. Daoud Merchant AKA Washboard Merch (John Law, Empirical) and Zands (Karl Jenkins) head the rhythm section whilst Will Rixon (Joss Stone) paints a modern image of the great early trumpet players. Bassist Tommy Antonio pays homage to Jelly Roll as he sings Ballin' the Jack, with guitar from rising star Nicholas Costley-White. The group has even caught the attention of film director and New Orleans enthusiast Woody Allen who has a copy of their first demo.
Recording to two inch tape with Ben Lamdin at Fishmarket Studios helped the band achieve that warm analogue sound and encouraged them to perform there and then with less flexibility in the edit. The band will be touring the UK in spring 2013 to promote the new album.
