FORCE Support Centre open day a huge success
Hundreds of people turned out to celebrate 20 years of FORCE Cancer Charity’s Support and Information Centre.
The Centre, in the grounds of the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, was a hive of activity all day as the charity welcomed patients, supporters, friends and healthcare professionals to catch up or learn about all the services FORCE offers to anyone locally affected by cancer, free of charge.
There were talks from the FORCE physiotherapy team, information nurses and counsellors as well as a moving endorsement from a patient who is part of the charity’s pioneering Living with Non-Curable Cancer programme.
Displays throughout the building highlighted the wide variety of support available including counselling, complementary therapies, relaxation classes, exercise sessions, support groups, a pre-loved wig service and benefits advice.
Visitors also chatted to the fundraising and finance teams about ways to support the charity.
Amazing
Ellen Holmes travelled all the way from Yorkshire to be a part of the celebration.
“It was an absolutely amazing day. Thank you everyone for your kindness. I feel blessed to have met you all today,” she said.
Kay Rickard added: “It was lovely and so nice to be able to chat to some of the people who work behind the scenes. Thank you xx.”
“It was a lovely, joyful event showcasing the excellent work you all do – thank you!” said Mary Greener.
There was also a fascinating display by staff from the hospital’s radiotherapy team, which has close ties with the charity.
Exciting
The event was initiated and planned by outgoing chief executive Meriel Fishwick and marked her final full day at the Centre after 34 years with FORCE.
“The Open Day was an opportunity to reflect on the charity’s achievements and celebrate 20 years of the FORCE Cancer Support Centre. It was also lovely to be able to look forward to exciting times as the charity welcomes new CEO, Kate Few Singh,” she said.
“We are so fortunate to have a such an experienced and dedicated team providing cancer support here in our community. However, the team is only able to do this vital work thanks to our wonderful volunteers, fundraisers and supporters. It was a remarkable way to end 34 years with the charity as well as feeling confident that FORCE will be here for generations to come.”
New CEO Kate Few-Singh said: “It was wonderful to see so many friends of FORCE, both old and new, with many memories and stories being shared. It was special to mark 20 years of having a dedicated space to support cancer patients. Thank you to everyone who has enabled us to provide support for people living with cancer.”
