Donning a hard hat, the Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Kevin Mitchell, recently took part in a special ceremony to mark construction work starting on the city’s newest retirement community, coming soon to Topsham Way, Exeter.

The Retirement Living development by McCarthy Stone has been designed to help to meet the needs of local retirees looking to ‘right-size’ by moving into specialist housing , in turn freeing up much-needed housing stock in the area for first-time buyers and families.

Councillor Kevin Mitchell joined the McCarthy Stone team to address the role McCarthy Stone will play in helping to improve the quality of choice of retirement living in Exeter. He also discussed development plans with the team before putting a spade in the ground and laying one of the first bricks.

Once complete, the Retirement Living development will offer a selection of one and two-bedroom retirement apartments specifically designed to meet the needs of the over 60s, along with communal lounge and garden spaces for socialising. Those eager to secure their dream home can do so when the properties become available to buy off-plan from Summer 2025 while first occupants are expected in early 2026.

Councillor Kevin Mitchell said: “There is an urgent need for more specialist retirement homes not just in Exeter but across the region and up and down the country. Developers, such as McCarthy Stone, have an important role to play in meeting that burgeoning demand and ensuring people can continue to live independently in later life. This is an incredibly exciting time for Exeter and I look forward to watching the development’s progress.”

Verity McKay, Divisional Marketing Manager for McCarthy Stone, added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Councillor Kevin Mitchell to our brand-new site in Exeter. McCarthy Stone recognises the shortfall of suitable housing specifically for older people and is therefore committed to designing flexible homes which allow people to make the most of their retirement years. We’re excited to share more details about our development and the vibrant lifestyle that comes with it.”

Homeowners will be well catered for at Orchid Place, with an array of amenities, excellent transport links, and delightful riverside walks, on their doorstep.

For peace of mind, a House Manager will be on-site during office hours to ensure everything runs smoothly, while each property will be fitted with state-of-the-art security features, including a 24-hour emergency call system.

More than nine out of 10 customers would recommend McCarthy Stone to a friend, ensuring it has received the full Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation.

McCarthy Stone is the only UK housebuilder of any size or type to achieve this rating every year it has taken part in the survey.
