Tyler Grange Exeter steps into the ring for charity
‘The Tribe’ at B Corp four-day week at Exeter environmental consultancy Tyler Grange has recently swapped development sites for the boxing ring – taking part in a team building session at the award-winning sport for development charity Empire Fighting Chance.
Ecology teams from the firm’s Southwest and London offices came together for a dynamic day of boxing. Using non-contact exercises, values of the sport were combined with evidence-based psychological principles to achieve enhanced productivity and wellbeing in the workplace.
In return, the consultancy experienced at first hand the importance of the charity’s work with young people – and how its techniques change lives – by being put through their paces in the professional boxing gym. The Tyler Grange Tribe also enjoyed competitive team games that were designed and facilitated by some of the young adults in the programme – one of which recently secured a full-time role at the charity.
In addition, the donation of some £3000 made by Tyler Grange, to cover the cost of the session, will fund four places on its 20-week Empire Fighting Chance Box Champions programme. It equips eight- to 25-year-olds with the skills, psychology-informed mentoring, and inspiration to make positive changes to their lives.
With an inspiring team of coaches, therapists, and mentors, Empire Fighting Chance seamlessly combines boxing, psychology, and intensive personal support to provide an environment where young adults have fun and feel safe and be inspired to realise their unique potential.
Rachel Chatting, Regional Ecology Director at Tyler Grange, said: “There were a number of key factors that made Empire Fighting Chance such an appealing partner for our team building activity. Firstly, it was immensely enjoyable and different to anything that we’ve done before, which always holds real appeal for us as a business. We love to innovate and do things a little differently”.
“Secondly, as a business that places such emphasis on CSR and the communities and causes around our seven nationwide offices, we were delighted to be able to invest in such a brilliant cause that does so much good in and around Bristol, where we have an office, and in partner schools and educational establishments across the region. We’re very happy and proud to support local young people in this way.
“We’ve always recognised the importance of mental and physical health at Tyler Grange and make significant investment in supporting our 85+ team in these areas. It’s great to help provide a similar provision to others who don’t get access to such support.”
Emily Haberfield, Head of Fundraising at Empire Fighting Chance, said: “Our charity was born on Bristol’s streets in 2006 to fight the impact of inequality on young lives. Empire Fighting Chance now deliver four psychologically informed non-contact boxing programmes that reach over 10,000 young people across the UK every year. Hosting team building sessions for the likes of Tyler Grange is an important means of fundraising and we hope to welcome more businesses through our doors.
“By doing so, they’ll be helping us to enable even more young people to get the support they need to lead positive and healthy lives and help us to prevent future loss of life to youth violence.”
