Valentines Piano Concert to light up Exeter Cathedral
This Valentine’s Day will see one of the world’s top pianists performing at Exeter Cathedral for a night of romantic piano music.
Presented by Candlelight Concerts, the programme features Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, Chopin’s “Raindrop” Prelude, selected nocturnes, and Debussy’s Preludes—all performed in the cathedral’s stunning setting, illuminated by the warm, flickering glow of hundreds of candles on stage.
The music will be performed by one of today’s leading pianists, Ben Schoeman, lauded by critics and audiences worldwide. A recent gold medal winner at the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition in London and the UNISA International Piano Competition, Schoeman is renowned for his extraordinary artistry and technical brilliance.
A seasoned concert performer, Schoeman has graced stages across the globe—from Carnegie Hall in New York to London’s Wigmore Hall, Barbican, and Cadogan Hall, as well as the Konzerthaus in Berlin. He has also made acclaimed appearances at prestigious festivals such as the City of London, Edinburgh, Chester, and Ottawa festivals.
Schoeman has recorded extensively with pianist Tessa Uys, including an ambitious project featuring all nine Beethoven Symphonies arranged for piano duet. This remarkable endeavour, released on SOMM Recordings, has received rave reviews from BBC Music, International Piano, Gramophone, and The Sunday Times.
Chris Guest, Artistic Director of Candlelight Concerts, commented: “This special Valentine’s concert is the ideal way to celebrate the season of love. Whether you’re a dedicated classical music aficionado or simply looking for a one-of-a-kind romantic experience, this spellbinding performance, showcasing the talents of one of today’s very best pianists, will whisk you away on a musical journey.
“We love coming to Exeter, and our shows in the Cathedral always create a magical experience, with its warm ambience and unique charm. However, with the added romance of Valentine’s Day, our 14 February performance promises to be particularly special—a real treat for anyone seeking something extraordinary for the occasion.”
