National Apprenticeship Week 2025: Exeter local flies high with help from apprenticeship!
Today marks the beginning of National Apprenticeship Week (10th-16th February), and Exeter local Luke Carr is a strong example of how professional apprenticeships can change your career path in ways you never knew were possible.
24-year-old Luke has now completed his software testing apprenticeship offered by ELMS Aviation (based in Exeter Airport) in partnership with Estio Training, part of BPP.
Speaking about his experience, Luke says: “Completing an apprenticeship allowed me to grow professionally and personally. Having completed the ELMS Aviation software testing programme, I’m now thriving in my career as a Quality Assurance Engineer”.
But this couldn’t be more different from where Luke’s professional journey began.
He explains: “I previously worked at a major retailer as a delivery driver installer from 2020 to 2023. While I enjoyed certain aspects of the job, such as developing my problem-solving skills, I realised in my final year that it wasn’t a long-term career path for me.
“I knew I needed a change, I spoke to a friend’s mother, who worked as a Test Manager. She introduced me to the field of software testing. Intrigued by her role and recognising how some of my problem-solving skills could transfer to this field, I decided to explore it further”.
Following the advice from his friend’s mother, Luke completed the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level course through Udemy, earning his certification.
He then began searching for entry-level opportunities in software testing and discovered the apprenticeship scheme offered by ELMS Aviation in collaboration with Estio Training, part of BPP, which ultimately proved to be an invaluable experience.
“It’s well-known that apprenticeships offer you the opportunity to develop technical knowledge and hands-on experience of your chosen field, but I also found that my confidence levels grew hugely, and I was able to learn so much from my course mates and teachers alike, who shared valuable insights and supported me every step of the way.
“Having no prior experience in software testing, I’m grateful that I secured an apprenticeship, as it allowed me to build a strong career foundation while contributing directly to the day-to-day business operations of my employer.”
Crucially, the ‘earn while you learn’ aspect of the apprenticeship was particularly important to Luke. “Being able to combine picking up real-world experience with earning a steady income gave me a real sense of independence at such an early stage in my career.
“The apprenticeship played such a huge part in getting me where I am today, as it gave me the skills, confidence, and opportunities to thrive in the software testing field. I’d recommend anyone seeking a new career direction to consider an apprenticeship, as I certainly haven’t looked back since I completed mine.”
