New business encourages visitors to “Drive Devon”

Created by a local car enthusiast, Drive Devon is a brand-new start up based in Ottery Saint Mary, East Devon, near EXETER. Offering the ever-popular Mazda MX-5 for hire, Drive Devon was born to cater for those wanting to explore the Southwest in an affordable open top sports car.

Drive Devon creator Ross Kelway has always had a passion for cars, having enjoyed owning everything from Alfa Romeos to Jaguars. Wanting to set up his own business and do something different after a career in higher education, Ross noticed a gap in the market locally for a car hire business for the leisure market.  

Ross said: “I’d noticed that you could travel to Scotland and do the North Coast 500 in a hired sports car, but in the Southwest and particularly Devon, if you wanted to explore our equivalent Southwest 660 (Google it, it’s brilliant!) you had very limited options, except to use your own car or transport.

One of the big issues is that if you arrive by plane, train or bus, you still need a car to get around a lot of Devon, particularly to some of the more remote beauty spots. So, I thought why not give visitors the chance to hire a little two seat sports car and go create their very own road trip.”

Drive Devon caters for visitors and local people wanting to explore the wonders of our beautiful county. That could include a day trip to the coast, a weekend on Dartmoor, or perhaps a week away touring Cornwall. The cars on hire are perfect for weddings and honeymoon road trips too!

Ross says, “I’m starting off small, but if the cars prove popular then I hope to grow the business over time and offer more sports cars for hire and do my bit to support our local economy”.
