Shetland Ponies to Steal the Show at Exeter Racecourse’s Family Raceday
Exeter Racecourse is set to host a day of action-packed family fun on Sunday 23 March as the pint-sized powerhouses of the equine world - Shetland ponies - take centre stage.
These spirited little racers, born and bred in the rugged landscapes of the Shetland and Orkney Isles, are a true testament to their ancient heritage. Shetland ponies are one of the oldest and purest breeds in the world, dating back over 2000 years and they will steal the show as they storm up Haldon Hill in front of a packed grandstand.
Twelve of these small-but-mighty ponies will thunder down the home straight, ridden by future Champion jockeys aged between eight and 13, in a spectacle that promises to delight audiences of all ages. Trained by the dynamic duo of Nikki Marsden and her son John Lamb, the Shetlands are ready to put on a show.
“We’re really looking forward to bringing the ponies to Exeter,” says John. “Shetlands can have a bit of a reputation, but we work with them as a group, and they thrive on it. They’re trained like mini racehorses – we keep their minds active with a variety of activities, and the more they do, the more they seem to love it.”
Among the star-studded line-up is Neville, a newcomer making his racing debut, and Orla of Aukhorn, who’s already showing promising form. But John’s tip for the day? Officer of Aukhorn. “He ran at Chelmsford last year and finished last, but he’s a year older and wiser now. I think he’ll run a big race this time!” Other ponies in the line up include Arlo of Aukhorn, Orknies Gold, Orknies Little Joe, Lille Rosendal, Edgar Bergli, Julian, Lunar Larsen, Knix Nadine, and Orknies Seigfried – each with their own unique personality and racing style.
With under 18s able to come racing for free, Family Fun Day at Exeter Racecourse is the perfect day out. From the moment the gates open at 12:30pm, the atmosphere will be buzzing with excitement. Children can take part in their very own running race down the home straight at 1:30pm, while the whole family can enjoy a carnival-themed extravaganza. Funfair stalls, crazy golf, glitter artists, and balloon twisters will keep everyone entertained, and there’s even a Punch & Judy show for the little ones as well as a brilliant afternoon of sport on offer.
Jack Parkinson, General Manager of Exeter Racecourse said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the Shetland ponies back to Exeter for what promises to be a fantastic day out for all the family. Our policy here at Exeter is that all under 18s are able to come racing for free to ensure that a day out at the races is an affordable and enjoyable day out for families. The Shetland ponies are full of character and charm, and their races are always a crowd favourite. Combined with our carnival atmosphere and exciting racing, it’s going to be a day to remember. We can’t wait to see everyone there!”
