Adult Recorder Orchestra to play concert at Ottery Church

On Saturday 22 June, The Exeter Recorder Orchestra will be performing at Ottery St Mary Parish Church. The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will be performed by 30 experienced, adult recorder players from around the South of England.

The Orchestra will play an eclectic mix of pieces, ranging from 16th and 17th century compositions written originally for consorts of viols and now arranged for recorders, to music by contemporary composers written specifically for recorder orchestra. The programme will also feature Vaughan Williams’ delightful English Folk Song suite.

The Exeter Recorder Orchestra was formed in 2004 and has been performing at concerts in and around the city since then. The Orchestra’s Musical Director is Pam Smith.

Rachael Shearmur of The Exeter Recorder Orchestra, comments: “Most people will be familiar with the descant recorder and possibly also the sopranino and the treble. The full range of sizes is actually much more significant: from the tiny garklein (about 15cm long) at one end of the scale to the sub-contrabass (about 2.5m tall) at the other. Each instrument has essentially a two octave range. The overall effect of a recorder orchestra is not dissimilar to a chamber organ, with all the different pipes effectively being operated by individual players.”

The event is being sponsored by Gilbert Stephens Solicitors LLP.

Liz Govier, a Partner based at the firm’s office on Broad Street, comments: “We are delighted to support this event - we would like to wish all those performing the very best of luck on the night.”

Tickets are £8 and can be purchased from Ottery TIC or the Church Office 01404 812062. A licensed bar will be selling wine and other refreshments.
