Hedgehog Street, a nationwide campaign set up by wildlife charities the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), to halt the ongoing decline in native hedgehogs, has this week launched ‘ Hedgehogs After Dark’ .

 Additional funding to help youth clubs through COVID-19

Like many voluntary groups and organisations, youth clubs in Devon are struggling right now to stay afloat, with bills to pay and no income to supplement them. It's left many in a hard place, and yet they're part of the solution in helping young people in the transition back to normal life.

The Youth Work in Devon Partnership is happy to announce that we have been successful in securing additional emergency funds for the youth sector. They are currently distributing over £60,000 to youth clubs across the county to ensure they can operate after COVID-19.

East Devon to reopen remaining gardens in line with new Government measures on exercise during the pandemic

The seven remaining East Devon District Council gardens which have been closed since the coronavirus lockdown will reopen from tomorrow. (Wednesday May 13)

The decision has been reviewed following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Sunday where new measures for exercise were introduced. Although the gardens will reopen, the council is reiterating that the strict social distancing measures must be followed by everyone.

Exploring the Exe Estuary with Tidelines community project

A new community project designed to celebrate and explore the Exe Estuary and coast, has been launched.

The project, called Tidelines and run in partnership with the University of Exeter, brings together arts, science, local knowledge and academic research to engage local members of the community with the estuary.

Project coordinators Jo Salter and Anne-Marie Culhane, will create a Community Hub to foster collaborative research between Exe estuary residents, students and researchers, to inspire new ideas to make a direct and positive impact on the local area.

Drainage repairs planned at Clyst St Mary roundabout

Drainage repairs will get underway at Clyst St Mary roundabout on the outskirts of Exeter on Monday (18 May).

Lane closures on the three main approaches to the roundabout will be in place 24 hours a day for the next four weeks while work is undertaken. However, the roundabout will remain open at all times.

Work to repair broken drainage pipes under the road will be carried out Monday to Friday during the daytime and the scheme is expected to be completed by Friday 12 June.

Bin-men rescue deer from bottle bank

Refuse workers in Exeter had ‘no i-deer’ they would be involved in an animal rescue when they turned up for work today.

Two bin-men jumped at the chance of rescuing a young deer after it got stuck upside-down behind a bottle bank in Cowick Lane, Exeter.

The public-spirited workers from Exeter City Council were alerted to the animal’s plight by a member of the public getting rid of her empties.

The young deer was able to run off, seeming non-the-worse from the experience after being lifted out of the tight space by the council workers.

University of Exeter student startup team launches COVID-19 Startup Support Fund

The University of Exeter’s Student Startup team has launched a new funding initiative, designed to support innovative projects during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new scheme, called the COVID-19 Startup Support Fund, supported by Santander UK and Research England, gives graduate entrepreneurs the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £2,000 to support projects that respond to some of the challenges caused by the pandemic. These could include innovating their current business model, developing new products or supporting initiatives to reach out and engage with new audiences....

One of the Westcountry’s leading suppliers of quality meat and game to the catering industry is providing vital help sourcing and delivering meat to food banks and charities while undergoing huge upheaval and change to its own business during the coronavirus pandemic.
