As libraries across the country celebrate National Libraries Week 2017 from 9th – 14th October, critically acclaimed authors, Michael Morpurgo and Stella Duffy, have been named as the first Patrons of Devon-based charity, Libraries Unlimited.

The authors, both of whom have been awarded an OBE for services to literature and services to the arts respectively, will support Libraries Unlimited in its aim to promote and encourage a love of reading and enrich people’s lives with unlimited access to ideas, imagination, knowledge and creativity.

Overnight closures planned on Bridge Road in Exeter

Night time closures will be in place on Bridge Road in Exeter over four evenings next week.

The road will be closed overnight from 8:30pm to 5:30am on Monday night (9 October). It will then be closed from 10pm to 5:30am on the evenings of Tuesday (10 October), Wednesday (11 October) and Thursday (12 October). All four lanes will be open during the daytime. Alphington retirees Peter and Mary Collins began volunteering at the Hospiscare Warehouse Shop on Trusham Road when it very first opened in 2012. Every Friday, Peter would repair donated furniture ready for selling in the shops and Mary sorted bags of clothes, sizing them, putting them on hangers then onto racks for distribution.

A unique collection of rarely seen photographs showing stars such as Judy Garland and Laurence Olivier making some of British Cinema’s most-loved films can be seen for the first time.

The photographs show actors – also including Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers – on set preparing for shooting or relaxing between takes. Tickets still available for Exeter’s Lost Weekend Festival of Music, Art, Tech and Ideas

Thousands of people are expected to attend Exeter’s newest festival this weekend with the launch of Lost Weekend in the city.

The oldest community transport scheme in Devon is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week (Wednesday 4 October).

The Exe Valley Market Bus, which operates in the Oakford, Stoodleigh and Washfield area of Mid Devon, started operating on 4 October 1977. It was the first community transport service established in Devon as part of the Government’s programme of Rural Transport Experiments (RUTEX) and nationally it was among four of the earliest community buses, along with schemes in Norfolk, Clwyd and East Sussex. The Bike Shed Theatre has been selected as one of 40 organisations across the country to take part in a flagship scheme to help end middle-class domination of the arts. The Exeter venue will join arts organisations including Turner Contemporary and Sage Gateshead on the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries programme which will employ graduates from lower income backgrounds.
