Iceland, 2012, 95mins. Dir. Baltasar Kormakur

When a fishing boat sinks in the stormy waters off the coast of Iceland every member of the crew perishes… except for one. What makes Gulli different and how did he manage to endure almost nine hours in the frozen sea? Based on astonishing true facts, this is the story of how one man’s innate survival instinct shocked an army of medical professionals and came to symbolise the strength and determination of a nation. Breathtaking seascapes frame this fascinating study of a reluctant national hero.

Why I love Exeter

About a week ago I saw a man kneeling down at the side of the road near to my house. Wondering what he could be doing I got closer and realised there was some litter on the road, which the gentleman was picking up piece by piece and putting into a bin bag. At the time I walked on by humming along to my music and didn’t think any more about it.

Later on in the evening, though, I started thinking about what I had seen earlier that day. I thought about the area I was from in Birmingham and whether someone would do this there. The short answer is probably not.

‘Sometimes you hear music and something about it instantly gets you. You get that tug. It’s a combination of the melody, the lyrics and that unidentifiable something else that just makes you go ’Wow.’ Then as a musician you’re thinking ‘Wow. I want to do that.’ So that’s what we’ve been trying to do.’

The Ramona Flowers' music mixes electronica, rock, indie, singer Steve Bird’s incredible falsetto and a lot of emotion; showing that sometimes a gentler sound can shout loudest of all. They could be compared to the likes of The xx, or in parts even to Bastille who they were...
