Education Minister announces reform to cut childcare costs

Elizabeth Truss, the education minister, is giving a speech this morning announcing plans to overhaul childcare rules. According to the new rules, nurseries and childminders in England are to be allowed to look after more children per adult in an attempt to cut childcare costs and boost standards.

Liz Truss has said that the ratio of children to child carers can be raised but only if the carers' qualifications meet new standards.

Further investment in bus services connecting to Exeter

Bus services connecting to Exeter are to benefit from further investment with a cross-city bus service being extended from next month.

Devon County Council is using financial contributions from the Milbury Farm development in Exminster to fund the extension of Stagecoach’s Service B.

Exeter City forward Elliott Chamberlain has joined Bath City on a month-long loan deal.

Panel to review new Chief Constable selection

The newly selected candidate to become Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police Shaun Sawyer is due to go before the Police and Crime Panel for approval on Friday 8th February.

Mr Sawyer will attend the public confirmatory hearing of the panel to answer any questions on professional competence and personal independence.

Huge wildlife haven to be created at Meeth

A vast wildlife haven is to be created at the former Meeth Quarry, a 150-hectare site recently purchased by the Devon Wildlife Trust thanks to funding from Viridor Credits Environmental Company and generous individual donors. The Trust is now set to implement a programme of improvements for wildlife and local access thanks to financial support from Natural England.

Meeth Quarry is a former clay works located close to Hatherleigh within the Northern Devon Nature Improvement Area and the North Devon Biosphere.

Police concerned for welfare of 87-year-old Plymouth man

Police are concerned about the welfare of a missing man from Efford in Plymouth.

Peter Campion, aged 87, was last seen on Saturday 26th January 2013 at his home address in Efford in Plymouth. However, he has not been seen since Saturday and may not be in possession of his medication.

He is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, with blue eyes, grey short hair and is usually clean shaven. He is thought to be wearing a suit or blazer with a trilby hat.

He is known to frequent hospitals across the South West and may have given a different name.
