Virgin retains South West Coast line, for now

The Department for Transport is in negotiations with Virgin Rail Group for them to continue providing rail services on the West Coast Main Line for a temporary period. This follows the fiasco that saw the London-Manchester-Glasgow service awarded to FirstGroup before a judicial review sought by Virgin stopped the contracts being signed.

The current franchise is due to expire on 9 December, after which it is the government’s intention that Virgin remain as operator for a short period – expected to be between 9 and 13 months – while a competition is run for an interim...

Appeal for witnesses in double fatal North Devon accident

Police are appealing for witnesses after two men in their 20s died in a fatal road traffic collision in north Devon.

Just after 8am on Friday 12 October, officers and emergency services were called to a single-vehicle collision on an unclassified road that leads from the A361 at South Molton to North Molton.

The Met Office says it has learnt valuable lessons and improved forecasting on the 25th anniversary of the Great Storm that wreaked havoc across Britain.

It left 18 people dead and caused morethan £1 billion of damage, sparking questions as to why there had been no warnings of what was to come.

Yet just hours before, BBC forecaster Michael Fish had said: "Earlier on today apparently a woman rang the BBC and said she had heard that there was a hurricane on the way.

City Centre update: John Lewis effect already kicking in

The first two days trading for John Lewis have been a spectacular success - both for store and City Centre. There were some challenges for the Store Management team during Friday afternoon - which temporarily closed the cafe and lower ground floor - but the team dealt with opening day glitches quickly and the Store was quickly fully open for business again. Saturday has seen large numbers of shoppers streaming in to the store and City Centre again.
