Christmas talk-a-thon for children's charity

Exeter’s Helen O’Grady Drama Academy has organised a talk-a-thon themed ‘If I was Santa for a day’, inviting pupils to speak for up to three minutes to raise funds for the children’s communication charity, I CAN – the leading charity helping children develop the speech, language and communication skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. This year, the Exeter Big Noise Chorus annual Christmas Concert, on Thursday 3rd December, will raise deaf awareness by teaching audience members to sign popular Christmas songs alongside their usual toe-tapping musical score. Indoor athletics winter fun in Exeter

Back by demand, starting this half term are the ever-popular winter Sportshall sessions, hosted by the the award winning South West Athletics Academy.

Exeter Hair Academy open day

The Skills Group Hair Academy in Exeter is holding an open day on Monday 10 November for potential hairdressing and barbering apprentices and salon owners who may be considering taking on an apprentice.

The event is part of Skills Group’s current ‘Learn a trade and get paid’ campaign to raise awareness of apprenticeship opportunities.

Young people are invited to attend from 10am-3pm to meet the hairdressing training team, and to take part in have-a-go sessions, demonstrations and master classes.

A teacher of British Sign Language (BSL) at Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education has won a regional award from UK charity and leading awarding body in deaf communications, Signature.

Matt Jenkins, who is from South Wales but now teaches sign language in Exeter and Bristol, is the recipient of the South West Teacher of the Year Award at the 2014 Signature Annual Awards.

The awards honour individuals, organisations and community groups that are striving to break down the barriers of communication between deaf and hearing people.

Reaching high: Gifted and talented Exeter College students celebrate success

Students studying as part of the Exeter College Reach Academy have been celebrating their achievements in a special awards ceremony.

Joining the students were key sponsors and contributors of the Academy from the Met Office, Michelmores LLP and the Exeter University Model United Nations group.

The Academy, launched in 2009 with an aim to support the most academically able students to reach top university destinations, has had another busy year. 60 students on the programme commit to an additional 60 hours of extra-curricular activity each week in order to boost their skills...

A group of deaf actors in Exeter will be given the chance to perform Shakespeare in a fresh way, thanks to a donation from the region’s leading housebuilder.

PaddleBoat Theatre Company has formed a relationship with the Royal Academy for Deaf Education in Exeter. PaddleBoat has now received a £1,000 grant from Persimmon Homes South West to help offer new performance opportunities to students at the Deaf Academy.
