Anita the Akita formerly known as Bullet - a very unsuitable name for a beautiful girl who was found wandering the streets of Bradford. She was picked up as a stray and placed in the dog pound and given seven days for her owner to find her.
It was discovered she was micro chipped and the owner was contacted. He claimed that he had sold her on but nevertheless he would come and collect her, presumably to sell her on again.
He didn’t show up and Anita’s time was up. Seven days had gone by and she was scheduled to be put to sleep.
On Saturday 16 November a local animal welfare and re-homing charity, ARC Animal Rescue Centre, will be holding a micro-chipping day at Chineway Road, Ottery St Mary.
Microchips will soon become a legal requirement for ALL dogs and we are planning to offer micro-chipping to all the dogs in the area, especially, but not exclusively, targeted at dogs that have been previously re-homed through ARC. Romanian policeman, Petrescu Vasile from Constanta, received an award through The Donkey Sanctuary’s Romanian project, for recognition of his contribution to animal welfare, after he rescued a severely neglected donkey and informed The Donkey Sanctuary of the animal cruelty he had witnessed. The donkey was found by a roadside in Constanta, collapsed on one side having being repeatedly beaten. South West insurer Cornish Mutual has launched a campaign to improve the safety of horses during transport. Called HorseSafe, the campaign is being run in partnership with the specialist animal rescue team at Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service. Animal cruelty, neglect and suffering are reaching unprecedented levels in modern times according to the RSPCA, the UK’s largest animal welfare charity.
Gavin Grant, CEO of the RSPCA, issued a stark warning today, stating that animal rescue charities are being overwhelmed with animals in dire need, stretching them to breaking point – all at a time when public generosity is under real pressure.
He said: “The recession may be over but these are very dark times for its silent victims – the animals. They have never needed our help so desperately.
