More than half (55%) of UK drivers do not always check their tyre tread before a long journey, new research from National Highways reveals as its new autumn safety campaign is launched.

In addition, more than a fifth (21%) of those who take long journeys and have broken down on the motorway, think their breakdown could have been avoided if they had conducted proper tyre checks before setting off.

The National Trust is celebrating the rich heritage of Killerton’s orchards, near Exeter, this October. From 10 October to 3 November, visitors can enjoy daily apple-themed activities and join the ranger team on weekends to press apples and learn about traditional cider-making.

On 16 & 17 October, Killerton is offering guided walks through one of the estate’s heritage orchards to the home of the 200-year-old apple press, with booking essential. Visitors to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth are in for a spooktacular treat this October with the Hide and Treat Halloween Hunt.

Hidden around the sanctuary are specially created Halloween crocheted character ‘Neddies’, which people can discover following the clues on their trail sheet.

This fangtastic activity combines family fun, exercise and brainpower. Trail sheets cost £5 each and includes a treat on completion.
