Digital Minister praises Cyber Security Week

There’s been more praise for Exeter businesses organising this week’s Cyber Security Awareness Week.

The Minister of State for Digital and Culture, Matt Hancock has sent a message congratulating them on taking the problem head on.

‘It’s great to see businesses in Exeter and the south West getting together to tackle this growing area of concern,’ he said

Exeter’s movers and shakers have been praising city businesses who joined forces to stage the city’s first Cyber Security Awareness Week.

Exeter aims to be Britain's first Cyber City

A group of Exeter businesses has banded together to raise awareness about tackling cyber attacks, currently the UK’s fastest rising crime.

The aim is to make Exeter Britain’s first Cyber City with a special week of events being held next month, to educate businesses as a matter of urgency on how to prevent being hacked and what steps to take after a cyber attack.

Autism alert card launches in Devon

A new card designed to help people with autism is launched by Devon partners this week.

Devon & Cornwall police are hoping the autism alert card will help officers and other emergency services identify people on the autistic spectrum, and will support improved engagement.

Police officers will also be provided with awareness information as to how they can adapt and improve their communication style according to an autistic individual’s needs, and better respond to situations involving autistic people.

Don’t suffer effects of breast cancer alone

This October for breast cancer awareness month, Macmillan Cancer Support wants to raise awareness of the side effects faced by people living with or beyond the disease.

Breast cancer survival rates have been improving for 40 years. More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before, thanks to improvements in treatment and earlier diagnosis. In the 1970s around 5 out of 10 women with breast cancer survived the disease beyond five years. Now it is more than 8 out of 10.

The focus of this year’s Domestic Abuse Awareness Week in Devon (24-28 Nov) is the impact of domestic abuse on children and families.

The poignant message for this year’s campaign, ‘Domestic Abuse Shatters Lives’, highlights the impact of abuse on victims as well as highlighting the impact on others surrounding that victim, including children and young people.

One in four women and one in six men experiencing domestic abuse at some point in their lives, and an estimated 750,000 children witness domestic abuse within their home in the UK each year.

This week Devon and Cornwall Police launch a new campaign targeted at students and young people to help change attitudes to sexual offences. The #NOBLURREDLINES campaign will target men and women aged between 16-37 to educate and inform them that sex without consent is rape. The campaign is targeted at potential victims and perpetrators, with the message that there are no blurred lines when it comes to rape and to dispel the misconceived notion that most rapes involve a stranger. Police events in Exeter to crackdown on cycle theft

Cyclists have the chance to find out more about bike security at two police events in Exeter. Local officers are holding two bike marking events to encourage cyclists to mark, register and lock their bikes. They take place at:

  • Exeter Flowerpots Skatepark on Saturday 19 October 2013 between 2pm and 4pm.
  • Waitrose car park, Gladstone Road, Exeter on Thursday 24 October 2013 between 3pm and 5pm.

World Water Day highlights the importance of clean water and sanitation

Today is annual World Water Day, a specific day designated by the United Nations to focus on the importance of clean water for drinking and sanitation.
