Tiverton boarding school turns over new leaf with new grounds equipment

A Tiverton boarding school has purchased a new fleet of grounds equipment after securing a six-figure funding package from HSBC UK as part of a wider overhaul of the grounds within the school’s 120-acre site.

Blundell’s School switched banks to HSBC UK in October 2020 and has used additional funding from the bank to purchase a fleet of high-quality grounds equipment, including tractors, a four-meter-long mower and a turf conditioner. Head Groundsman Graham Cox, who joined Blundell’s last January, has seen improvements on many fronts thanks to the new equipment.

Participants wanted for Down's Syndrome Multi-Sports Festival

A free event offering youngsters with Down’s syndrome the chance to try out a variety of sports is taking place in Devon in March… and it’s looking for participants.

The Multi-Sports Festival will be held at Blundell’s School in Tiverton on Monday 4th March and participants of all ages and abilities are invited to take part.

Blundell’s School announces new head

The Board of Governors of Blundell’s School, have today 13th November, announced that Mr Bart Wielenga has been appointed as the new Head of this leading co-educational day and boarding school. Mr Wielenga will take up the position with effect from September 2018.

Mr Wielenga will become the thirtieth Head of Blundell’s School and will succeed Mrs Nicola Huggett when she leaves to become Head at Cheltenham College.

Mr Wielenga is currently Second Master at Blundell’s and has made a significant contribution to the growth and reputation of Blundell’s in recent years.

Blundell's School is delighted to announce another set of excellent GCSE results, which once again exceed the national average despite the recent climate of changing educational pressures. Once again 50% of all grades were at A and A* level, and this year we saw our pass rate rise to a terrific 98%.

Blundell's students complete Ten Tors Challenge

Twenty-two students from Blundell’s School took part in the annual Ten Tors event on Dartmoor over the weekend.

Despite gale force conditions in camp the night before the event, reducing sleep to just a couple of hours, all students made it to the start line at 7am and completed their respective distances in great spirits.

Conditions which improved as the weekend progressed served well to spur them on. Blundell’s fielded three teams; two 35 mile groups and a 45 mile group.

First for Devon girls’ rugby team

A team from Tiverton achieved great success at their first attempt playing in the world’s largest school rugby tournament. But, while the Blundell’s boys’ teams are a regular feature at Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens, it was the girls’ team that were runners-up - the first time that a girls’ team from the school has entered the competition. Many of the girls only took up the sport this term so the team have gone from beginners to prize winners in less than ten weeks.

Blundell’s Prep pupils raise funds for blood bikes

Pupils from Blundell’s Prep School, Tiverton, were thrilled to hand over more than £2000 to Devon Freewheelers, the emergency courier service. The youngsters raised the money during the autumn term through a variety of initiatives including selling Christmas cards that they had designed, collections taken at their carol service and running games and selling second hand books and toys and refreshments at their Christmas market. Six Blundell’s pupils, who all live in Mid-Devon, are celebrating after being offered places at Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Both Bertie Frankpitt and Toby Whitehead have offers for St Edmund Hall, Oxford – Bertie to read Earth Sciences and Toby for Biochemistry and he also has a choral scholarship. Harriet Nash has had an offer to read Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge, where she will be following her brother Edward to Gonville and Caius College.

Christmas jumpers raise cash for CHAT

There were some fantastic Christmas jumpers on display at Blundell’s School, Tiverton, on 1 December – all being worn for a good cause.

Pupils and staff paid for the privilege of putting on their best festive knitwear and the money raised will go to the Churches Housing Action Team (CHAT), which gives free, impartial and confidential housing advice to those experiencing housing difficulty in Mid Devon.

Pupils at Blundell’s regularly raise more than £10,000 a year for local, national and international charities through a variety of events and activities.

Blundell’s School continues to deliver excellent A Level results

Blundell’s School continues to be deliver excellent results at A Level with some very strong results achieved by pupils in both the Upper and Lower Sixth. In the Upper Sixth (Year 13) of 97 pupils, 41% of the results gained were at A*/A with 23 pupils gaining 3 A grades or higher and over two thirds of all grades were between A* and B. The A Level pass rate was 99%. The Lower Sixth (Year 12) gained the best AS results ever at Blundell’s: from a cohort of 107 pupils, one third of the pupils gained A grades with 75% of the grades at A-C and a 95% pass rate.
