Obese people outnumber smokers two to one in the South West

NEW figures from Cancer Research UK show that people who are obese now outnumber smokers two to one in the South West, as the charity urges Government action to tackle obesity.

While smoking is still the nation’s biggest preventable cause of cancer and carries a much higher risk of the disease than obesity, Cancer Research UK’s analysis also reveals that being overweight or obese trumps smoking as the leading cause of four types of cancer – bowel, kidney, ovarian and liver.

In the South West, three in ten adults are obese.

Tim tackles second end-to-end walking challenge

Builder Tim Bradley is about to set off on his second end-to-end walking challenge in two years.

In 2017 he trekked 1,150 miles from the tip of Cornwall to the most northerly point of the British mainland in memory of his son, Rian, from Exmouth, who died in 2016.

On Saturday (April 6) he will begin the same hike but in the opposite direction, leaving from John O’Groats and aiming to reach Land’s End on June 9.

Staff from Old Mill raise over £2,600 running the Great West Run

Three staff from Exeter based accountants and financial planners Old Mill ran the Great West run on Sunday to raise funds for FORCE.

Stuart Coombe, Kim Barnard and Simon Cole have raised over £2,600 by taking on the Exeter half marathon in memory of their colleague Nick Baker, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2016.

FORCE is an Exeter based cancer charity that has been funding research and buying equipment to improve patient care since 1987.

CLIC for Christmas 2018 - final lineup revealed

On 4th October, the finalists from the Devon Schools Choir Competition, run by La La Choirs, took centre stage at Southernhay URC and competed for a chance to perform in Exeter Cathedral at the annual sell out concert, CLIC for Christmas. Three choirs had been shortlisted and the choirs at the final sang two songs each. Yet again, the standard was incredibly high, giving the judging panel a really hard time deciding between them. Andi takes to a tandem in support of fellow cancer patients

Police dog handler Andi Darbey from Exeter took part in the FORCE Autumn Series cycle ride on Sunday, just 48 hours after her latest round of chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Andi was diagnosed in June and in July she began a treatment plan that involves chemo, surgery and radiotherapy.

But she is determined to stay active and continue raising money for a charity she has supported for many years and is now supporting her.

Massive boost for East Devon cancer patients

FORCE Cancer Charity has announced it is to begin funding the delivery of chemotherapy at Honiton Hospital from this autumn.

It will run alongside a raft of support services for anyone in the area affected by cancer.

Marie Curie’s first shop in Exeter opens on South Street

Terminal illness charity, Marie Curie, has opened a new shop in Exeter. The shop on South Street is the first the charity has opened in Exeter and will raise vital funds to help Marie Curie Nurses care for people living with a terminal illness. The shop was officially opened by local Marie Curie Nurse, Linda Haynes, Shop Manager Vikki Coshall and Devon Community Fundraiser Connie Thomas who cut a ribbon and celebrated the opening of the new store.
