A pioneering new strategic research centre, that will aid health professionals to design bespoke physical activity and exercise plans to improve the everyday lives of young people with cystic fibrosis, has been launched.

The ground-breaking research centre, which comprises an international team of experts led by the University of Exeterm was announced on Saturday, March 5. It will be led by Professor Craig Williams in conjunction with Dr Alan Barker, both from Exeter’s Sport and Health Sciences department.

Ten people took their own lives in prisons in the South West during 2015 as the suicide rate behind bars remained at an alarmingly high level, figures seen by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today (Thursday 28 January).

They were among a total of 29 people who died in the region’s prisons last year, according to data published by the Ministry of Justice.

Four people took their own lives in Exeter prison. Two people died by suicide in Bristol prison and two more in Guys Marsh prison. Deaths by suicide were also recorded in Dartmoor and Erlestoke prisons.

Seaton Jurassic construction complete

The main build of Seaton Jurassic and the public amphitheatre has now been completed.

Funding boost for Exeter homeless charity

The first grant to be awarded by, a newly founded trust, the MAXIMUS Foundation UK has been made to St Petrock’s, Exeter’s charity for people who are homeless.

“The trust is set up to give one-off grants to small community based charities whose work means something to our employees or resonates with what we do as a business,” explains Jude Hartley, administrator of MAXIMUS Foundation UK, “and St Petrock’s was nominated by one of our Exeter employee, Trish Leworthy.”

The money’s in for charity swim

LED are pleased to announce the grand total raised for the Force Cancer Charity Swim in February is over £5,138 with money still coming through!

Earlier this year swimmers across LED's five swimming pools were invited to take part in the Force Cancer Charity Swim where swimmers were asked to take part in either a 14 or 28 mile swim over the course of the month.

Fifty swimmers took part in the challenge to raise money for this local charity that has played a vital role in local cancer services for the last 26 years.
