Teenagers should exercise like kids

As little as two minutes of high-intensity exercise four times a day improves health outcomes in adolescents, but the same amount of moderate-intensity exercise does not reap the same rewards, according to a new study from the University of Exeter.

Researchers found that when exercise is broken up into short bursts over the course of a day – replicating the way young children go about being active – only high-intensity exercise is effective in improving blood sugar levels, fat metabolism and blood pressure in adolescents after the consumption of a fatty meal.

The research,...

The installation of a new Moorland Play Park in the Dartmoor village of Holne was celebrated recently at a packed community event.

Previous equipment had become very dilapidated and when this small rural parish needed to find a large sum to fund a new park – they asked Dartmoor National Park if it would be able to help. The group used a small grant from the National Park to secure a substantial amount from Biffa Award, and with additional support from local Councillors, local fundraising, including a quiz night at the Church House Inn and a donation from Mike and Gill Cunniam of...

‘Green shoots’ for music education but more investment needed

The retiring musical director of Exeter Cathedral, Andrew Millington, has called for more investment in children’s musical education, saying it can transform lives.

Andrew, who has been made a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music in recognition of his contribution to church music over the last 40 years, said the increasing interest in choirs and singing, that has given birth to the Military Wives choirs and others, showed there were some ‘green shoots’ but that many church choirs were struggling.

“We know from the outreach work we do with the Cathedral choir how so...

Make a connection to fostering

Devon County Council's fostering service is asking local residents to make a connection to fostering as part of Foster Care Fortnight 2015, to raise awareness of the need to recruit more foster carers.

With around 650 children currently in the care of the local authority, the Council is asking people if they believe they have the skills to make a positive change to the lives of children and young people, then consider becoming a foster carer.

This year’s Foster Care Fortnight, with a theme of ‘make a connection’, asks people to talk about what fostering means to them, their...

One in three children have not heard a cow moo or a sheep baa up close

Hearing a real cow moo or a sheep baa for the first time is a special moment but a new survey of primary school children has revealed that this experience is becoming increasingly rare.

The results show that more than 1 in 3 children have never heard a sheep baa (37 per cent) or a cow moo (34%) up close, with thousands only experiencing it through their TV or computer screens. The survey, which was released ahead of this weekend’s Open Farm Sunday, revealed the disconnect many children have with farming and where their food comes from. One in four children (24 per cent) surveyed...

Plans to double free childcare

The Government has announced plans to double free childcare for hard working families – which will benefit up to 50,000 parents in the South West to the tune of £5,000 per year.

The offer of 30 hours of free childcare per week during term time means parents will be able to get on while bringing up a family.

All three- and four-year-olds in working families will be eligible for 1,140 hours of free childcare per year - twice the current entitlement.

The £5,000 extra in savings is on top of the £2,500 they can already save from existing free childcare offers. The new...
