Devon school children to discover the best of local farm produce at Farm Wise Devon

Devon farmers and primary school children will come together for an event designed to take children on the food journey from field to plate.

Approximately 1,200 children from nearly 30 primary and special schools from across Devon will attend the event - the first of its kind in Devon - on Tuesday 22 October, at the Westpoint Arena near Exeter.

Devon and Cornwall Police urged to end child detentions

Five children are locked up overnight in Devon and Cornwall Police cells each week, figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform reveal today (14 October).

New research by the charity shows that there were 285 overnight detentions of children aged 17 and under in police stations across the region during 2011.

The total across England and Wales was 40,716 – which equates to an average of 112 detentions per night.

However, the true number is likely to be far higher as some of the largest police services in the country were unable to provide figures.

Devon County Council completes first stage of it's youth service review

Devon County Council has completed the first stage of its review of Devon’s youth services. The review, launched in August, aims to look at how the council offers its support and services to young people in Devon and in particular how to support those in the greatest need by improving how youth work is linked with early help and prevention services. The review was launched following Devon’s children’s protection services being given an inadequate rating by regulating body Ofsted. The review has sought the views of over 600 people, 130 youth workers and 140 community and voluntary...

Mother and children in Braunton helicopter rescue

The police helicopter was involved in the rescue of a mother and her two children who were lost in north Devon on Sunday night.

At about 7.20pm on Sunday (29 September), Devon and Cornwall Police received an emergency call from the mother who was described as "distraught" and "panicking". She was with her ten-year-old and three-year-old children and told police that she was lost on Braunton Burrows.

She had been walking since 6pm and her children were getting cold and upset.

Devon and Cornwall Police say that the woman had been trying to find her way back to her car...

Spookley at Darts Farm

Meet Spookley, a square pumpkin in a round pumpkin patch world at Darts Farm this October.

Children aged four to 12 are invited to spend a fun-filled afternoon on the farm, learning about pumpkin growing and enjoying the story of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, who overcomes bullying through showing kindness to others and making new friends along the way. As you take a walk around the pumpkin patch, children can pick their own pumpkins to decorate in the Darts Farm Teepees and enjoy a range of pumpkin treats and refreshments.
