Three Devon councils have announced that they will be working more collaboratively to drive forward economic growth.

Exeter City Council, Teignbridge District Council and East Devon District Council today (Monday 24 November) signed an agreement that paves the way for joined-up decision making on planning, housing, resources and infrastructure.

Library plans get the go-ahead

Devon County Councillors today agreed plans aimed at keeping all the Council's libraries open and run by professional staff, despite significant reductions in the service's budget.

Members heard that Councils elsewhere have successfully transferred the delivery of their libraries to ‘mutuals’ or ‘trusts’ who run the libraries on the Councils’ behalf.

And that library staff, previously employed by those Councils, have been retained and continue to professionally run their libraries, with local communities having a greater say in how their libraries are run.

Have your say on proposed highways budget reductions

A public consultation has been launched today (Friday 3 October) by Devon County Council on proposed savings to its highways and traffic management service budget.

The County Council has already reduced its highways revenue budget by £18.5 million since 2010. However, it now needs to cut a further £3.4 million in 2015/16 as part of the £100 million savings required by 2017, due to the ongoing austerity measures imposed by the coalition Government.

Over 5,000 Exeter households in Fuel Poverty

Over 10 percent of Exeter households are considered to be in fuel poverty according to a report discussed by Devon County Council today.

5,494 households in Exeter are currently spending more than 10% of their household income on heating or are unable to keep their home adequately heated.

Countywide, fuel poverty exists in every one of the areas looked at in the report. Currently Exeter has 7 of the worst 10 fuel poor areas in the county with the others being Ilfracombe Central, Bideford North and an unspecified area in Tiverton.

Economic growth stunted due to faults with funding process, claims LGA Chairman

East Devon District Council is flying the flag for the fifth annual Armed Forces Day following a flag raising ceremony on Monday (24 June).

A special Armed Forces Day flag will fly at EDDC’s headquarters in Sidmouth, along with sites all around the nation.

Otterton Primary School pupils get to grips with local democracy at East Devon

Children from Otterton Primary School have been finding out what it’s like running a council.

Thirteen Year 6 students were welcomed by East Devon District Council on Friday 1 March, having arranged special activities such as debating a pretend planning application, deciding how to spend a hypothetical £5000 on community projects in Otterton and even designing the perfect councillor.

Feniton residents and councillors have been left reeling following news that another two applications for more homes have been submitted to East Devon District Council.

Still clearing up after recent flooding and issues with sewage, the village is facing another battle with developers who hope to gain permission for up to 120 homes on land at Ottery Road.

Essential repairs to Exeter High St planned for January

Essential work to address persistent drainage and subsidence problems in Exeter’s High Street is scheduled to start as soon as January sales are over, Devon County Council has announced.

The City Centre will remain open for business and there’ll be minimal disruption while the work is done, is the message from City Centre Manager, John Harvey.
