South West schools to take part in UK engineering challenge

Students from schools in the South West will become real-life engineers for a day when they research, design and build solutions to real engineering problems.

  • On Tuesday 20th November, John Bentley School (Calne) will host a Faraday Challenge Day. Teams from St Johns Marlborough (Marlborough), Abbeyfield School (Chippenham), Sheldon School (Chippenham), The Springfields Academy (Calne) and The Clarendon College (Trowbridge), will also take part.

Why would you give up a well paid job and take on a full-on Farm Shop in a recession? Well it has become a family affair - and an obsession to create something special on a local basis - for Mandy Pitts, Shaun Ryder and daughter Ellena, with a little help from a staff of 20 local people. Ryders Bakery took the leap to move its HQ from Dawlish to their farm in Kenn, a purpose-built bakery, trebling its size and opening the door for expansion with access to a quicker road network for better distribution. Dartmoor Brewery and CAMRA help Dawlish get back on track

On 6th September, Exeter and East Devon CAMRA, supported by members from the whole south-west region will be raising a pint to celebrate the re-opening of the Dawlish line. During the closure, local pubs and south-west brewers, suffered significant disruption to their business.

A photo shoot will take place at 11.15am at Dawlish railway station in partnership with First Great Western, after which CAMRA members will campaign for the support of real ale and local pubs in Dawlish and Dawlish Warren.

ROSS Mavis

Formerly of Vicarage Gardens, Dawlish for many years, Widow of Ian Gray Ross.

Passed peacefully away at Fernihurst Nursing Home, Exmouth on 13th January 2014 aged 82 years.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral service at the Exeter and Devon Crematorium (St Paul’s Chapel) on Monday 27 January at 9.45am.

Passed peacefully away on 12 October 2013 aged 81 years.
