Devon County Council has been gathering the views of local county councillors, Exeter city councillors and the Police in order to help shape plans, and now want to hear what the whole community think.
The consultation will run for a six week period from Monday 23 September until Sunday 3 November, and includes public meetings and exhibitions where residents can find out about the background and reasoning behind the part-night lighting initiative, and discuss any concerns they may have.
The public meetings will enable local people to hear about the proposals and speak...
It has been reported that 1,700 council workers across the South West are employed on ‘Zero Hour’ contracts. Councils in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall employ workers on the contracts that have been criticised by unions and politicians. Last week Business Sectary Vince Cable announced a review of the practice over concerns that it is being used to exploit low-paid workers. The contracts have been used in some cases to ensure workers do not work elsewhere while not guaranteeing an adequate wage. Devon County Council and Teignbridge District Council are among councils in the South West that...
Devon County Council is seeking opinions from residents of Exeter on proposals for part-night street lighting in residential areas.
The Council has already sought views of local councillors and Police before seeking the views of the wider community. Information on the proposals is available online and at several exhibitions which open around Exeter today (23 September) where feedback can also be given. There will also be four public meetings where residents can talk directly to the officers involved with the plan. The reduction in street lighting is part of an on-going programme...
Devon County Council’s Labour Group were shocked at the revelation that Devon County Council has admitted it has almost 200 staff working on zero hours contracts, and that the use of the controversial contracts by the authority is growing.
The Labour Group will put down a formal motion to the Authority’s next full council meeting to cease the use of these contracts.
The County Labour Group previously attempted to persuade the County Council to agree to paying low paid staff a living wage , to bring it into line with Labour-led Exeter City Council, but this was rejected by...
Devon County Council's latest apprentices had a breath of fresh air when they took part in a voluntary exercise on Dartmoor recently at Shapely Commons near Moretonhampstead.
Not confined to their offices for the day, twenty Devon County Council apprentices were ‘let loose’ on a 3,000 year old Bronze Age settlement. The aim was to clear an area of gorse and bracken for use by the general public and as an added bonus reveal 6 'hut circles' of significant archaeological interest.
The day began with an uphill climb from the car park to the hut circles, which were barely...
Councillors will hear Devon County Council’s vision for Exeter’s libraries next week in a report to the Exeter Board.

“We are investing a huge amount of money in transforming Exeter Central Library into a new multi-million pound resource for information, learning and culture at...
Stoptober – the 28-day stop smoking challenge which last year saw over a thousand people in Devon complete the challenge, is set to return this October, and Devon County Council’s public health team is marking the national campaign with a range of support for those trying to quit.
Smoking remains the nation’s biggest killer with half of long-term smokers dying prematurely from a smoking disease.
New research shows that people who quit smoking for Stoptober, and don’t smoke again, could gain an extra week of life, every 28 days, for the rest of their life. And anyone who...
Devon County Council is calling on Exeter to use a car club to cut down on congestion and travel costs. Through LSTF (local sustainable transport funding) the county council is supporting Exeter-based company Co-Cars to buy more vehicles and raise the number of users. By joining the car club residents can book a car when needed without the cost of keeping one on the road full time. Cars are parked in a designated bay and can be unlocked through a smart card. The vehicles are clean and have full insurance, tax and MOT. Members can use the vehicle for as long as they have booked it for and...
