Rachel to run marathon dressed as a lobster

Rachel Marshall, a 39-year-old Mortgage Adviser from Exeter will be running the London Marathon on 26 April dressed as a lobster, to raise money for national deafblind charity Sense.

Rachel who has named her lobster Loulou, said: “People often ask me ‘Why a Lobster?’ and to them I say ‘Why not?’. I was looking for a costume as at last year’s marathon I felt so jealous of the spectacular response people in costumes get and when I saw Loulou I couldn’t help but smile. Other people smile when they see her too and that can’t be bad!”

City Council agrees funding for warden and Home Call services

Exeter City Council has agreed to continue the funding of the warden and Home Call alarm services for residents in the Council’s older persons’ accommodation.

This follows a Devon County Council decision to withdraw annual funding of £182,000 for these services.

The Home Call alarm facility provides an emergency monitoring service 24-hours-a-day and helps safeguard the welfare of older residents. However, the availability of this service isn’t confined to elderly, Exeter or Council residents only.

Devon churches awarded £1.25m for roof repairs

The Bishop of Exeter has welcomed the announcement that 23 churches in Devon are to receive grants totalling over £1.25 million from the Roof Repair Fund for Listed Places of Worship.

Over a third of the Devon churches that applied for funding received a grant from between £10,000 and £100,000 towards the urgent repair of roofs, gutters and drains.

Exeter Pound enters new partnerships

Exeter City Football Club has agreed to become a partner to Exeter Pound. Discussions have begun to explore how the club will take the local currency at St James Park.

Gill Westcott, Chair of the Board of Directors of Exeter Pound said: "Exeter City Football Club is a key player in the community. We will be delighted if the Exeter Pound can be used at the club."

Antibiotic risk for coastal water users

Recreational users of coastal waters such as swimmers and surfers are at risk of exposure to antibiotic resistant bacteria, according to new research published this week.

In the first study of its kind, scientists at the University of Exeter Medical School have assessed the amount of water ingested during different water sports, and combined this with water sampling data to estimate people’s exposure to bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

A group campaigning for better travel solutions in the south west areas of Exeter is calling on local councils to review their current plans for transport provision across Alphington, Marsh Barton, Cowick and the 3,000 homes due to be built on the Alphington/Exminster edges of the city.
