This Exeter family together hope to raise £50,000 by taking on Exeter’s Great West Run in a bid to help four-year-old Sophie Joy walk unaided for the first time.

The team is made up of Sophie's father Daniel Case, Deborah Down, grandmother and Jade Down, auntie.

Sophie has battled Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy from a very young age, and despite the tireless efforts of her parents to support her with as much physio at home, she will only see her condition improve significantly with an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy.

Wiggins to race in Tour of Britain

Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford says Sir Bradley Wiggins will attempt to retain his title at this year’s Friends Life Tour of Britain, which returns to Devon on Thursday 11 September.

Wiggins, who won the Tour de France in 2012 and won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games last month, will lead Team Sky at this year’s Tour of Britain, Brailsford confirmed in a BBC interview. Other riders who will be competing are expected to be named soon.

First World War memorial website launches

An online memorial to the fallen men of the Clinton Devon Estates communities has been launched.

The website, www.devonremembers.co.uk was created from information gathered by volunteers from across the Estate's towns and villages.

The event was attended by key people from the Estate, local media and the volunteers and historians that tirelessly researched and compiled the stories of those who fell during the war.

People are invited to add their own stories and photographs on the site, or by emailing mail@devonremembers.co.uk .

Dog owners urged to keep pets under control

East Devon District Council is pleased to report that so far this year most dog owners are obeying the various dog control measures on beaches.

Everyone wants to enjoy the beach, particularly in warm summer weather, and it is quite possible for all users to get along together if everyone is considerate to others.

Details of the Dog Ban areas are shown on the large signs that are easy to see at the main entrances to the beaches, and also by checking the East Devon website. Regardless of any official restrictions, all dog owners must always behave responsibly with their dogs...

People across Devon and Cornwall are being asked to share their experiences of using the police non-emergency number 101.

Based on feedback he receives during engagement events Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has today launched a major public consultation as part of his office’s review into the 101 service.

The review will be led by Dr Karen Vincent, the OPCC’s Performance and Customer Service Manager, in collaboration with the Force and will assess how well the service is meeting the needs of callers and to identify and deliver any required changes.

This summer, LEO Pharma and Otter Nurseries have teamed up to bring the Know Your Skin™ campaign to Devon to raise awareness of solar keratosis among gardeners. Solar keratosis (also known as SK) is defined as rough or scaly skin patches that develop where unprotected skin has been exposed to sun over time. Rural crime cost the SW £5.5m in 2013

Rural crime cost the South West economy an estimated £5.5 million in 2013 (a slight decrease from £5.6 million in 2012).

The figures are part of a UK-wide survey by NFU Mutual.

The leading rural insurer’s annual Rural Crime Survey shows the nationwide cost of rural crime totalled an estimated £44.5 million in 2013 – a rise of 5.2%.

The most common items targeted by thieves in the South West over the last 12 months were tools, quad bikes and machinery such as hay balers and ploughs.

Firefighters urge vigilance

Home and business owners are being urged to be extra vigilant as the firefighters strike enters its third day today.

The action is part of a dispute between the Fire Brigades Union and the Government over pension reforms.

Firefighters will strike between noon and 2pm and 10.59pm and 11.59pm until Saturday 16 August.

While the issue is a matter between the Fire Brigades Union and Government, every Fire & Rescue Service has a legal duty to maintain a level of service to local communities as best it can.
