England selectors include three uncapped players in Ashes squad

England selectors have named a 17-man squad for the Ashes Test series in Australia including three players uncapped at Test level – Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, Warwickshire pace bowler Boyd Rankin and Durham all rounder Ben Stokes.

In total six players are included in the squad named on Monday (23 September) who did not feature in an XI during the recent 3-0 Investec Ashes series victory. Alongside the uncapped Test trio, Michael Carberry, Monty Panesar and Chris Tremlett have all been recalled.

Carberry has been capped once at Test level, making his debut in...

England take point in Ukraine to leave them top of qualifying group

FIFA World Cup 2014 Qualifier, Tuesday 10 September 2013, Olympic Stadium, Kiev

England's World Cup destiny remains in their own hands after a somewhat drab goaless affair in Kiev.

With England one point clear at the top of group H, victory in their remaining home games against Montenegro and Poland on 11 and 15 October respectively, would see them qualify for Brazil 2014 as group winners.

With few chances for either side, a 0-0 scoreline seemed a fair outcome. England offered little in the way of attacking flair - an early...

"Fans want a successful England" says Dyke, as he sets goals for national team

The Football Association’s Chairman, Greg Dyke, has set the England football team with a target of winning the World Cup in 2022.

The 66-year-old former BBC director general is to lead a commission with the aim of improving England teams’ success at international level.

Speaking at a lunch hosted by England team sponsors Vauxhall, Dyke admitted the lack of English-qualified players currently playing in the Premier League was “serious, very serious”, and that he intended The FA to work “hand-in-hand” with the all sections of the game for the sake of the national team and...

Lambert's dream goal gives England victory against Scotland

England 3

Walcott 29, Welbeck 53, Lambert 70

Scotland 2

Morrison 11, Miller 49

A goal on debut is special. A goal with your first touch on debut is extra special. When it's your international debut for England against Scotland, at the age of 31, having played only one season in the Premier League, it's the stuff of dreams.

So it was that Rickie Lambert came off the bench to score England's winner in the first encounter between England and Scotland since 1999. A terrific header from a Leighton Baines cross ended Scotland's sterling effort against...

Chris Wood

Event Date:
04/12/2013 - 8:00pm
Venue:
Exeter Phoenix

Criticised by an art school lecturer as having “a remarkable eye for trivia”, Chris Wood’s love of small things has made him one of England’s most vivid and arresting song writers. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. Hollow Point is his chilling ballad of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezez and Wood’s feel for the sheer “one thing after another-ness” of life allows us, for the first time, to see the event through the eyes of the victim.

‘The finest and most original singer-songwriter to have emerged from the British folk scene...

A sketch of Spain

“I've never seen an English person smile. Is that because of their bad teeth?”

It came as a bit of a shock when, during my year abroad in Spain, I discovered the stereotypes that Spanish people have of the English. As well as poor dental hygiene, they seem to believe we are a race of silent, serious people, who drink tea from dawn till dusk while discussing the Royal Family. We are also stressed all the time and definitely have no idea how to 'fiesta'.

Now, I agree that the Spanish are champions of partying, but a main factor in this, of course, is the differences between...

As of yesterday, same-sex couples will be able to get married in England and Wales after new measures became law.

This movement has been welcomed by the more accepting population of England and Wales, and perhaps opened the eyes of those less supportive.

The Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat leaderships all backed the proposals, which were finally approved by MPs and peers earlier this week.

Maria Miller, the equalities minister, said marriage would remain the “bedrock” of society but would now be open to same-sex couples as well as heterosexuals.

South West sitting on a £170 million fortune in leftover foreign currency

A YouGov poll, commissioned by easyJet, today highlights that adults in the South West could have an extraordinary £170million of leftover foreign currency lying around at home.

The research released by easyJet, the South West’s largest airline, and its onboard charity partner UNICEF, the world’s leading children’s organisation, marks the start of the summer Change for Good campaign on 15 July. The campaign, which raises money for UNICEF’s work vaccinating children against deadly diseases, includes an onboard collection where passengers donate their loose foreign change to UNICEF...

Major shift in breast cancer care on horizon as NICE recommends preventative drugs for 'at-risk' women

Hundreds of thousands of women across England and Wales could be spared the distress and uncertainty of a breast cancer diagnosis by taking a daily pill to help prevent the disease. Updated guidance by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says the NHS should give tamoxifen or raloxifene to particular groups of women with a family history of cancer [1] because the drugs can help stop them getting breast cancer if they are taken for five years.

Roughly 50,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK [2], making it the most common...

Haydn Thomas gets England call-up

Haydn Thomas has joined Exeter Chiefs team-mate Tom Johnson in the England squad preparing to tackle a star-studded Barbarians line-up at Twickenham this Sunday (1pm).

The 30-year-old scrum-half, together with Sale’s Kearnan Myall, have both been added to Stuart Lancaster’s 25-man squad as nine of England’s summer tourists will be in action for either Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints on Saturday in the Aviva Premiership final.

Thomas is in contention for a first appearance in a senior England shirt, while 6ft 7in lock Myall, 26, has featured for England Saxons since...
