Badger sleeping habits could help target TB control

Sleeping away from the family home is linked to health risks for badgers, new research by the University of Exeter and the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) has revealed.

Scientists found that badgers which strayed away from the family burrow in favour of sleeping in outlying dens were more likely to carry TB.

The 12-month study of 40 wild badgers was funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and could have implications for the management of bovine TB in parts of the UK.

Exeter Scientists key to creating one of UK's greenest schools

Scientists at the University of Exeter have been heavily involved in developing a school which is in the national top ten for energy efficiency.

Experts at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Energy and the Environment have been studying the first year of operation of Montgomery Primary School in St Thomas, Exeter.

They say the school uses less than a third of the energy of a typical school, which puts it in the top 10 per cent of schools nationally for energy efficiency.

Devon braced for flooding as rain continues to fall

A number of flood alerts are in place across Devon, following a Met Office yellow warning for heavy rain. The Rivers Exe, Otter, Sid, Clyst, Culm, Creedy, Little Dart, Teign, Bovey, Lemon and Exmouth area could all be affected. The Environment Agency says low lying land and roads are most likely to be hit first, and some travel disruption is expected on Thursday morning with treacherous road conditions. Bid to cut accidents at work starts next week

Businesses on a busy trading estate in Exeter are being offered free health and safety training in a bid to reduce the number of accidents at work.

Exeter City Council is teaming up with the Health and Safety Executive and other partners in an effort to make the work place a much safer place to be on the Marsh Barton Trading Estate.

In 2012, 255 accidents at work were reported by Exeter businesses – over 40% of these were from the Marsh Barton area.
