Essential repairs to Exe Estuary Trail

Essential repairs will be carried out on the section of the Exe Estuary Trail from Exmouth to Lympstone next week.

This section will be closed from Monday 24 November to Thursday 27 November, between 9am and 4.30pm, while surface repairs are undertaken.

Police in Exeter are appealing for information following three linked sexual assaults.

Two assaults occurred along the footpath which runs alongside the River Exe opposite the Quay area of Exeter and down towards Double Locks public house.

On both occasions the offender approached the female victims on a bicycle and touched them inappropriately before riding off.

The first incident occurred at around 5pm on Tuesday 11th November, up river from the Double Locks public house.

Reed Revival on the Exe

The first water reed to be harvested in Devon in 25 years has been cut by scythe on reed beds opposite Topsham on the Exe estuary. Scythe practitioner, Chris Riley spent a labour intensive week harvesting just over an acre of water reed, which can reach up to 10ft high. “Water reed is an untapped resource, because of its inaccessibility and the manual labour involved in cutting it.”

Chris encourages the resurgence of scythe use: “It’s so important to keep rural skills alive and there aren’t many people with the skill and energy to harvest large areas of reed with a scythe.” For...

Devon braced for flooding as rain continues to fall

A number of flood alerts are in place across Devon, following a Met Office yellow warning for heavy rain. The Rivers Exe, Otter, Sid, Clyst, Culm, Creedy, Little Dart, Teign, Bovey, Lemon and Exmouth area could all be affected. The Environment Agency says low lying land and roads are most likely to be hit first, and some travel disruption is expected on Thursday morning with treacherous road conditions.
