Fun in the sun at EDDC Community Festival

Local children and parents came along to the East Devon District Council (EDDC) Community Festival in The Crescent in Littleham, Exmouth on Saturday 17 May.

As part of the day the new £40,000 outdoor Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) with lines and goals for netball, basketball and football, was officially opened.

Town Mayor and EDDC Champion for Exmouth, Councillor John Humphreys, cut the ribbon and declared the games area open and ready for fun. As part of the opening basketball coaching was available from a professional basketballer on the new games area.

Tree Walk with East Devon District Council’s Countryside team

East Devon District Council’s Countryside team will be starting their ever-popular annual series of Tree Walks on Monday 2 June at 6.30pm at Phear Park in Exmouth. The topic for this walk will be the management of trees in council-owned recreational areas.

Police axe half of public enquiry offices

Devon and Cornwall Police are expected to close more than half of their public front offices in a controversial bid to save money. Across the two counties the force is expected to fully close 10 out of 21 public front offices while the Newquay desk will only open during summer. The public desks at Exmouth, Tiverton, Honiton, Okehampton, Newton Abbot, Totnes Falmouth, Penzance, Launceston, Bude and Liskeard will all be closed under the plans. Wild flower walks at A la Ronde

Explore the wonderful wildflower meadow at A la Ronde near Exmouth on 22 May at 11.30am and 2.30pm when a knowledgeable guide will lead visitors around the meadow and help them discover some of the species that grow there.

This event is free but numbers are limited. Tickets are available from the shop on the day.

New measures against future floods

New Measures designed to help home and business owners protect their properties from future flood events were approved by East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) Cabinet meeting this week.

Cabinet Members agreed to give delegated authority to the Chief Executive to administer the East Devon elements of a scheme that forms part of a nationwide Government initiative prompted by the devastating storms and floods experienced during the past winter.

A new exhibition will be on display from Thursday 8 to Wednesday 21 May featuring the work of a well-known local Exmouth artist at A la Ronde, the National Trust property near Exmouth.

‘Times and Seasons’ by John Onley is a series of paintings based on landscape and townscape studies at home and abroad worked in pastel, acrylics and mixed medias. Mayor to break ground £5m Exmouth hotel

The Mayor of Exmouth, Cllr John Humphreys is to ‘break the ground’ as work starts on the new £5m Premier Inn for Exmouth next Tuesday.

Cllr Humphreys will be joined in the cermony by New Openings Manager for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants Carly Wintle, for Whitbread PLC, to offically begin work on the construction of Exmouth’s new 60-bedroom Premier Inn, with cafe and conference facilities, which will open for business in spring 2015.

Record Number of South West Beaches Hit Top Standards

A record number of South West beaches have achieved the highest bathing water standards this year according to a report from Marine Conservation Society (MCS) released today. The MCS 'Good Beach Guide’ shows that 173 out of 195 (88.7%) South West beaches received the top standard for excellent water quality.

Nationally MCS has recommended 538 out of 734 (73%) UK beaches tested during last summer as having excellent water quality –135 more than the previous year.

Internationally acclaimed chef, Michael Caines joined Eagle One Homes Director, Chris Fayers to officially open the Spinnakers showhome complex on Saturday (12 April).

Developed by Eagle One Homes, Spinnakers is the newly completed waterside development of 14, two and three bedroom apartments on Exmouth Quay.

To celebrate the launch Michael cooked two signature dishes from his book “Michael Caines: At Home” in one of the apartments contemporary kitchens in front of a crowd of visitors. He then moved into the living room to undertake a book signing.
