Historical data hold secrets of one of UK’s favourite fish

UK fisheries survey logbooks from the 1930s to 1950s have been digitised for the first time, revealing how cod responded to changing temperatures in the last century.

Scientists at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and the University of Exeter found that at the time, the warm seas experienced around Norway benefitted the cod, similar to the conditions there today.

Most cod eaten by the UK comes from northern seas including the Barents Sea around Norway, because the stocks there at the moment are at record highs. Cod stocks were also big...

Marine litter hindering benefits of the coast

Marine litter can undermine the psychological benefits of coastal environments, a study has shown.

The beneficial effects of the blue environment to human health and well-being are well documented, but there has been little research into how the growing global issue of marine litter might negate them.

To measure this, Plymouth University secured funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to assess public reaction to the differing conditions of coastlines.

Participants were shown images of clean...

Website helps anglers find best spot to fish

A new mobile-friendly interactive website has been launched today to help anglers, and would-be anglers, find the best spot to fish.

To promote the launch on 9 June...

Warming seas risk for fishy favourites

Popular North Sea fish such as haddock, plaice and lemon sole could become less common on our menus because they will be constrained to preferred habitat as seas warm, according to a study published in Nature Climate Change.

Fish distributions are limited by water temperature and some species can only thrive in certain habitats and depths. In the last 40 years the North Sea has warmed four times faster than the global average and further warming is predicted over the coming century, leading fisheries scientists to study how this will impact on commercial species.

SWW fined by Environment Agency

South West Water has been ordered to pay over £40,000 in fines and costs after polluting a Devon watercourse in a case brought by the Environment Agency. Exeter Crown Court heard how a combination of plant break down, telemetry failures and poor management on the part of South West Water resulted in Woodbury’s Polly Brook becoming contaminated with poor quality sewage, which subsequently led to the death of a number of fish. South West Water admitted to two charges, namely by allowing sewage effluent that had not been fully treated to pollute the stream and also, failing to notify the...

Students expose some fishy behaviour

Fish exposed to increased noise levels consume less food and show more stress-related behaviour, according to new research from the University of Bristol and the University of Exeter.

However, the way fish decreased their food intake differed between the two British species tested.

When exposed to noise, three-spined sticklebacks made more foraging errors, whereas European minnows tended to socially interact more often with their companion fish or to reduce activity.

The team used controlled laboratory experiments to investigate how the foraging behaviour of...
