Rivers on flood alert as heavy rain forecast

The Environment Agency has issued flood alert warnings for Devon's rivers as heavy rain is expected to hit the region.

Outbreaks of rain, which will be persistent and heavy at times, are expected to spread east across southern England during Wednesday morning.

Many parts of Devon have already seen large rainfall accumulations over the past few days and therefore this further rain may cause come minor local surface water flooding. Lightning may be an additional hazard.

The public should be aware that some local disruption to transport looks likely.

Hundreds to benefit from tidal flood scheme

The Environment Agency is reviewing options to manage the risk of tidal flooding at Starcross and Cockwood on the Exe Estuary in Devon. The proposed scheme is estimated to reduce flood risk to over 600 residential and commercial properties.

The scheme is being accelerated as part of the March 2015 Budget announcement regarding the 6-year flood defence programme.

Majority fail to check flood risk levels

As we approach the anniversary of the June 2007 summer floods, people in Britain are still not checking the flood risk of their homes, in spite of increased incidents of flooding in recent years.

There’s still time to take advantage of flooding grants but people need to hurry as the deadline is 31 March.

Exeter residents and businesses who experienced flooding between 1 December 2013 and 31 March 2014 can apply for grants of up to £5,000 to install flood resistance measures to their property.

The government recently extended the deadline for the Repair and Renew Grant scheme. The scheme covers homes and businesses where flood water entered the property, and can be used to install measures such as flood barriers, airbrick covers and non-return valves to help prevent...

Council plan to reduce flood risk to properties

Thousands of homes and businesses will have their flood risk reduced with the potential work Devon County Council is involved in delivering over the coming years.

Devon County Council’s Cabinet will be asked next week (Wednesday 11 March) to approve the flood risk action plan for the coming financial year.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as we start the new week.

Periods of rain and strong winds will affect the South West later today (Monday), with the rain becoming particularly heavy at times on Tuesday before clearing during Wednesday morning.

Network Rail has announced plans for tackling the problem of continual flooding at Cowley and Stafford bridges in Exeter.

This solution involves the removal of three weirs close to the bridges to lower the water level in this part of the River Exe.

More Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop north of Exeter later from noon today, forecasters say. The first phase of the Exeter Flood Defence Scheme is due to start this summer as part of a £36bn programme of infrastructure developments across the UK. The scheme which will cost around £30m is expected to bring an estimated £200m of direct economic benefit to Exeter. Hurricane-force winds to hit South West

The Met Office warned that hurricane strength winds of up to 80mph will hit the South West again today to again test the regions already battered storm defences.

In the fifth consecutive day of extreme weather conditions the public has been told to prepare for even more flooding, transport disruption and power outages across Devon.

The winds will reach their peak at mid-day today as the weather system pass over the county but potential hail storms and heavy rain can still be expected until much later in the day.
