Exeter's Real Food Store and Cafe is celebrating on hearing the news that they have reached the final stages in this year's Food and Farming Awards in the Best Local Food Retailer category. This unusual project was started by a group of enthusiastic food lovers who upheld values of sustainability, locality and seasonality. This team also had a wealth of experience in bringing about enterprises that positively impact on both members within the immediate community and non-members alike. The nomination said, “Excellent customer service with knowledgeable staff, and high quality food which...
Why would you give up a well paid job and take on a full-on Farm Shop in a recession? Well it has become a family affair - and an obsession to create something special on a local basis - for Mandy Pitts, Shaun Ryder and daughter Ellena, with a little help from a staff of 20 local people. Ryders Bakery took the leap to move its HQ from Dawlish to their farm in Kenn, a purpose-built bakery, trebling its size and opening the door for expansion with access to a quicker road network for better distribution. Mandy, after 30 years in the Recruitment industry, was keen to take on a new challenge...
Will the ways we produce and distribute our food in Devon continue into the future? This is a major question to be addressed at mid-Devon conference next month.
Food is a critical issue for Devon’s economy and environment. Farming, fishing and food production are essential components of our culture. In addition, there is traditional Devon fare, food festivals, meat, fruit and vegetable competitions and hundreds of restaurants or eating places.
Yet at the same time, food poverty is a growing reality for some local people. The growth in Food Banks in the...

Bring your imagination to the table, as we design magical menus and decide what our favourite characters might like to eat for dinner.
(Note to parents:the workshop will include the chance to sample some...

Are you always on the lookout for new, stylish foodie ranges to add spice to your kitchen store cupboard? If so, the country’s favourite chilli farm has the answer.
South Devon Chilli Farm has recently introduced a range of sleek black stand-up pouches of chilli powder to its range of high end, hot products. There are four chilli powders available: Chipotle, Ancho, Guajillo and the extremely hot Bhut Jolokia. These resealable black foil pouches (70g) all retail for £2.80 except for the mighty Bhut Jolokia chilli powder which retails at £7.35.
Skirt steaks with red currant, shallot and port sauce
Skirt has traditionally been only used for slow cooked dishes, but with a little care this relatively inexpensive piece of beef makes the juiciest steak. I recently cooked it for a couple on holiday in Devon and they raved about it. Serve it with roasted potato wedges, and whatever green vegetable is in season. The redcurrant sauce worked really well with the meat. Onglot, which is very similar to skirt, can be cooked in the same way. I got my meat from Pipers Farm shop in Magdalen Road, where they will know exactly what you are...
I pretend it’s not happening until autumn is right on top of us. The unstoppable, overwhelming green tide of growth turns round and meekly disappears into the ground.
We get a fiery display as the leaves drain of green, going out in a blaze of glory. Let’s hope for more of the glowing light of September to give October that incandescent quality.
The wet, cold summer gave extraordinary growth to cool country plants, and things that need warmth suffered. Fewer insects - the cows never got besieged with flies - meant that all those insect-eating birds did not...
