Steeno's magic boot strikes again

A record-breaker last week, a headline-maker this week – it’s all in a day’s work for Exeter Chiefs star Gareth Steenson.

Not for the first time in his illustrious Chiefs career, the Irishman’s right boot again proved lethal, downing visiting Northampton Saints to keep Rob Baxter’s side firmly in the picture at the top end of the Aviva Premiership.

Having broke the game’s deadlock with an early kick, Steenson then slotted four second half penalties to go alongside Olly Woodburn’s fourth try of the season.

Northampton, who won the corresponding fixture 8-3 back on...

Steenson’s 17-point haul, plus a second half try from Dave Lewis, sealed win number nine of the season for the Chiefs who remain second in the table, just four points adrift of leaders Saracens after 13 rounds of the...

It’s four years since Exeter Chiefs last got the better of Leicester Tigers, but the strides that have been made in that time were there for all to see at Sandy Park. Rob Baxter’s ‘Class of 2015’ underlined their ever-growing promise with a workmanlike display from start to finish.

Skipper Gareth Steenson landed the killer blows for the home side, converting his own first half try to go alongside four successful penalties.

Opposite number Owen Williams countered with two penalties of his own, but it was never enough for English rugby’s most decorated club Fresh from their...

Jack Nowell marked his return to the Exeter Chiefs side by scoring two tries in his side’s 38-11 Aviva Premiership win over London Irish.

The England international grabbed a try in each half as Rob Baxter’s side ran in six tries in a dominant display at Sandy Park.

Skipper Gareth Steenson started the try-fest and also added four conversions, before he was joined on the scoresheet by Don Armand, Luke Cowan-Dickie, James Short and the impressive Nowell.

In reply, Scottish international Blair Cowan claimed a consolation try for the Exiles, who also added two penalties...

Chiefs thwarted in nail-biter

Exeter’s hopes of becoming the first-ever side to lift back-to-back LV= Cup titles were thwarted at the death as Ben Spencer kicked a last-gasp penalty to give Saracens victory in a thrilling encounter in Northampton.

Having battled their way back from 20-6 down midway through the second half, the Chiefs were ultimately denied when the former Ivybridge Community College student punished Greg Bateman’s late indiscretion with a pressure kick.

It was a heart-breaking moment for the defending champions, who having led 6-3 at the break thanks to two penalties from skipper Ceri...

Change of focus for the Chiefs

Gareth Steenson believes a change of focus could be just what he and his Exeter Chiefs’ team-mates need after a rough month of Aviva Premiership action for the Devon club.

Sitting comfortably in third spot just prior to Christmas, four successive losses has seen Rob Baxter’s side slip two rungs down the league ladder in as many weeks.

The latest setback came on Sunday at the Madejski Stadium when a last-gasp drop-goal from Shane Geraghty saw London Irish edge out the Chiefs 28-26 with the last kick of the game.

It was another painful blow for the Chiefs, who the...

Baxter hails Steenson's contribution

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has praised the contribution Gareth Steenson has played in helping the Devon club establish themselves as a force within the English game.

Welcoming the news the Irish fly-half has this week agreed terms on a new three-year deal that will keep him at Sandy Park until 2018, Baxter wasted little time in reflecting on the contribution put in by the Dungannon-born back.

“There’s no magic ingredient,” said Baxter. “Steeno has improved over a period because his gained more and more experience in the Premiership and in Europe and those...

There's more to come says Steeno

Gareth Steenson insists there is still "more to come" from him despite landing another milestone in his illustrious Exeter Chiefs career. Steenson's eight-point haul in last weekend's European Challenge Cup victory over Connacht not only helped his side move to the top of Pool Two, but it also took him past 1,500 career points for the Devon club. Now into his seventh season at Sandy Park, the Dungannon-born star has played an integral part in the recent rise of the Chiefs. His metronomic right boot has not only helped to down teams across England and Europe, but it's helped pin-point Rob...
