Evening talk, ‘The Mother and Father of All Things.’ Local author Dr. Justin Newland’s long study of Ancient Egypt culminated in the publication of his debut novel, The Genes of Isis’, an alternative genesis of the human race. This evening he’ll be talking about his writing, the novel, and why Ancient Egypt is known as the ‘Mother and Father of All Things’.

The event is an illustrated talk and is part of the 2018 Exeter Literary Festival.

£1m donation for cutting-edge medical research in Exeter

The University of Exeter Medical School has received a £1 million donation from The Dennis and Mireille Gillings Foundation towards its pioneering work in genetic disorders.

The generous donation will fund new staff to allow the Medical School to expand its research to improve patient care in the NHS and beyond, building its expertise in the diagnosis of genetic disorders, including in early pregnancy, and other innovative diagnostic testing.

National Paracycling Champion Tom Staniford has an extremely rare condition which, until now, has puzzled his doctors.

He is unable to store fat under his skin – yet has type 2 diabetes – and suffered hearing loss as a child. Now, thanks to advances in genome sequencing, an international research team led by the University of Exeter Medical School has identified Tom’s condition and pinpointed the single genetic mutation that causes it.

Exeter Professor joins Nobel Week Dialogue

Nobel Laureates and world renowned scientists will gather on 9 December 2012 in Stockholm for the inaugural Nobel Week Dialogue, and University of Exeter philosopher of science Professor John Dupré will be among them.
